West Orange Police Officer Dennis Hankins was assaulted in an attempt to make an arrest Sunday morning.

Hankins responded to a disturbance call at approximately 6 a.m., in the 2200 block of Crabtree Street. A female at the scene said she had been assaulted by her husband, who had since left. Shortly, the suspect was discovered hiding in the  garage. Hankins was  assaulted while struggling with the suspect in an attempt to make an arrest. The man stole the officer’s gun and fled the scene.

A short time later, the suspect was discovered at a residence a short distance away. Again, the suspect fought with officers attempting to make the arrest. Handcuffed, the suspect was taken to Orange County Jail where he was charged with Attempted Capital Murder, one count of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer and Theft of a Firearm from an Officer.

According to West Orange Asst. Chief Jessie Romero, Officer Hankins was transported to St. Elizabeth’s hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

The Orange Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Pinehurst Police Department and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office assisted  in the ongoing investigation.
