Area Event updates due to Gustav

Last updated 8/29/2008 at Noon

The Pinehurst city administrators have made the decision to postpone

the annual Labor Day Picnic. With the possible apporach to the area by

Hurricane Gustav the decision was made a 11:00 A.M. that it would be

best for all concerned to postpone the picnic until a later date.

"We

have so many details to attend to for the picnic and so many good

people have made committments to  the picnic that we met this morning

and decided that it would be best to postpone the picnic until possibly

early October. There are things like the food that needs to be

prepared. There are so many things that we have to do in advance,"

said Dan Robertson, City Administrator. "Details about the rescheduling

will be posted as they become available."

Lamar State College-Orange announced it will suspend all classes and operations for Tuesday, Sept. 2 because of the Labor Day Holiday and the uncertain path of Gustav. Weather permitting, they will reopen for business as usual on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Future updates for faculty, staff and students will be available through the ConnectEd notification system. Further announcements will be made through local media outlets and the college website, http://www.lsco.edu.

In response to the approach of Hurricane Gustav toward the Gulf Coast, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is stocking all necessary fuel, water, food, medications, and supplies, and making arrangements for essential staff to be on hand to meet the health care needs of veterans. The center currently has 81 beds available to receive patients in need.

At this time, the MEDVAMC and the outpatient clinics in Beaumont, Conroe, Galveston, Lufkin, and Texas City plan to remain operational to ensure veterans have timely access to health care. Veterans are strongly encouraged to keep their scheduled appointments. Visit

http://www.houston.va.gov/emergency/emergency_preparedness.asp or www.hurricanes.gov/ for emergency preparedness tips, useful Web sites and telephone numbers, suggestions for a disaster supplies kit, and more.

All veterans are advised to follow evacuation orders given by local city and county governments.

For VA updates and the latest emergency response information, call the MEDVAMC Emergency Information Hotline at (713) 794-8989 or 1-800-553-2278, ext. 8989.

In the event that an evacuation is called, due to Hurricane Gustav, you will be able to receive updates from the Little Cypress-Mauriceville District by going to the www.lcmcisd.org Website.

There will be red links on the right side of the home page referencing Hurricane Gustav instead of the “What’s New at LCM” links that are there now.

One of these links, “Important District Information,” will have postings to give you updates on what is pertinent to all of the LCM Family.

The other link, “Hurricane Discussion Forum,” will be a blog, similar to the one that we used following Hurricane Rita.

If you don’t see answers to your district-related questions on these links, you may e-mail Sherry Combs at [email protected].
