K-Dan’s rebuilding after early Monday fire
Familiar Orangefield fixture K-Dan’s Super Foods is closed after a fire around 2 a.m. Monday.
“Evidently something electrical was the cause of the root damage,” said Danny Brack, co-owner along with Kenneth Smith of the 10-year-old grocery store and deli off of Farm Road 105.
“We got a lot of smoke damage … and will have to rewire the entire building. I imagine that will take several weeks,” Brack said.
“The firefighters did an excellent job. If not for their early response and quick reaction time, it would have been a total loss.”
Brack said he counted at least six pumper trucks at the scene.
He added that regular customers of K-Dan’s plate lunches can still find daily specials at Danny’s Super Foods on Western Avenue in West Orange.
Chance Chatagnier, dispatch supervisor with the Bridge City Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, said a breaker box was the suspected origin of the fire.
“We worked the fire with 17 firefighters, and it was out within 10 minutes of our arrival,” she said. McLewis volunteer firefighters assisted with the blaze, she said.
“We stayed on the scene until 4:15, doing salvage operations and damage assessment,” she said. “There was damage to the room of origin, smoke damage to the entire structure and water damage in the room of origin.”
