Author to speak for cancer research
Mitch Albom, international bestselling author of “Tuesdays with Morrie,” “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” and “For One More Day” will speak at a benefit for the Todd Christopher Legacy of Love Cancer Foundation at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Julie Rogers Theater. A book-signing with champagne and dessert reception will follow. KFDM-TV anchor Bill Leger will serve as master of ceremonies.
Albom will impart his life-affirming speech “For One More Day: Appreciating the People and the Moments We Have Right Now.”
Writing poignant narratives which urge readers to treasure the beauty of life, Albom enjoys worldwide popularity. All three of Albom’s best-sellers have been adapted into award-winning movies. Christopher, a Beaumont native, lived a life of enthusiasm and determination. Spending four years at Texas A&M, where he played football for the Aggies, he was recruited by the NFL after graduation, but his career was shortened by a knee injury. This, however, motivated him to fulfill his entrepreneurial vision of establishing businesses that provided health care products to ease a patient’s pain, made available needed assistance during recovery or long illness, and enabled the patient to remain at home. Two of his companies, Taylor Medical and Home Care Supply, achieved these goals. He battled an aggressive form of cancer, finally succumbing in 2008.
The Christopher Foundation provides financial assistance for the urgent needs of Southeast Texas cancer patients and their families by helping with such essentials as a house note, car note, food, rent, transportation, utilities, or medications not covered by insurance.
Serving as honorary chairs of the event are local attorney and philanthropist, Walter Umphrey and his wife, Sheila. Event co-chairs are Chris and Martin Broussard, Clayton Christopher, Cheryl and Gary Christopher, Gerri Christopher, JoBeth and Mike Jenkins, Lisa and Sam C. Parigi Jr., and Shelley and Joe Tortorice. There are more than 180 additional steering committee members who are also involved with the event.
“Todd Christopher was a wonderful person and a great friend,” said Umphrey. “His life was shortened much too early by cancer. How fitting it is that the newly established foundation in his memory is devoted to helping the needs of Southeast Texas cancer patients and their families. Sheila and I are proud to serve as honorary co-chairs of the event celebrating his life and raising funds for this outstanding cause.”
