VFW makes contest plans

Orange VFW Post 2775 and Ladies Auxiliary kicked-off the new fiscal year with a Barbecue / Membership Drive with post commander George Jones and Auxiliary President Gail Duhon leading the event. 

According to Auxiliary secretary Jeanette Clark, other post officers are senior vice Robert LaFleur Jr., vice Dennis Helwig, quartermaster Bill Dunn, adjutant /service officer John Clark, chaplain Hank Perkins, surgeon Johnathan Hickman, judge advocate Jim Brewer and three-year trustee / house committee chairman Wilbert Duhon. Auxiliary officers are senior vice Joyce Romero, junior vice Geri Bean, treasurer Patricia Kemp, chaplain Margaret Malone, conductress Lesly Suppes, guard Brenda Perkins and patriotic instructor Linda Kam. Most members also work programs and other activities carried on at the post.

Members will soon visit local schools and distribute materials for the annual Voice of Democracy Audio / Essay Scholarship contest for ninth through 12th grades, Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for sixth- through eighth-graders and Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year ( K-5, 6-8 and 9-12).

They will be in the schools soon after the new year begins.

These all have a Nov. 1 deadline, as well as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, Fireman of the Year and EMT of the year.

Other programs with a later deadline are Scout of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year, Patriotic Art Contest and Orange Memorial Scholarship Program and Auxiliary State Nursing Scholarship.

The auxiliary has a number of other programs they work or support, such as Cancer Aid and Research, Community Service, National Home, Legislative, Buddy Poppy, Hospital and Veterans & Family Services.

There are also scholarship programs for VFW and auxiliary members.

All information on these programs will be placed in local papers as they become available, along with contacts and numbers.

Each year over $3,000 in Scholarships and Bonds alone are awarded at the annual Loyalty Day Awards Program.
