Exploding lawn mower causes accident
An Orange County Correctional Officer and two inmates escaped without injury during an accident on Interstate 10 caused by an exploding Dixie Chopper lawn mower.
The officer and inmates were returning to Orange County Jail after a work assignment in Vidor, Thursday afternoon around 3:45 p.m.
They were towing the Dixie Chopper on a lowboy trailer. The mower caught fire and exploded near Farm Road 1136.
According to Det. Chad Hogan, the explosion caused the truck and trailer to veer to the left and strike the retaining wall on the interstate. The truck and trailer began spinning, causing the trailer to flip over and the Dixie Chopper to be thrown from the trailer. The lawn mower came to rest next to the truck causing the truck to catch on fire.
The officer and inmates sustained no injuries, but were transported to Baptist Hospital and treated for heat exhaustion, then released.
The truck and Dixie Chopper were a total loss. The trailer only sustained minor damage.
Hogan said the McLewis Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. The crash is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
