Fruit Salad

While shopping last Monday, we heard one lady hollering to another one to get eight or nine bananas, because that’s what mama always gets.

That brought back a lot of memories.

My mama always made a dish pan full of fruit salad every Christmas.

Papa went to the Market Square every Saturday to purchase fur hides from the trappers, and he’d send them to market.

There was always lots of things on the Market Square to purchase, especially fruit.

He would bring home apples and oranges as big as grapefruit every winter.

On Christmas day we’d have about 35 for dinner and momma always made her famous fruit salad.

I really don’t remember what else she put in it.

Mainly I remember that the men sat at the dinning table, the women at the kitchen table and the kids out side on the back porch.

Last Saturday, while having my hair done, my hair dresser told me that her mother DeDe, made a great fruit salad that everyone just loved and that it was so simple.

All you need is the canned fruit.

It is expensive.

When she bought the fruit, she puts it right into the frig and when she gets ready to make it; it’s already cold.

• 1 can mandarin oranges, drained • 1 16 ounce chunk pineapple, drained • 1 can peach pie filling • 3 bananas • 2 packages of frozen sliced strawberries I also have a fruit salad using cherry pie filling.

• 1 can cherry pie filling • 1 can chunk pineapple (drained) • 1 can sweetened condensed milk • 1 large whipped topping • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans Mix all ingredients  together. Be sure and don’t feed either of these to a diabetic. It would be nice if someone would send me a diabetic fruit salad before Christmas. Any way either is Gooder’n Syrup. Von
