Jaycees’ parade set for Saturday

The Orange Jaycee’s Christmas parade has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday – with a new route – after it was canceled Dec. 4 because cold weather, rain and snow.

Instead of the usual route from MacArthur Drive to Green Avenue, it will be the Mardi Gras route, starting at the corner of Green and Simmons, running down Green to Seventh Street, left to Front Avenue and down to Second before returning to the corner of Green and Simmons.

Parade entries are asked to be in the large parking lot before 5:30 so floats can be lined up. Entry forms are not required and there is no charge to take part.

The theme for the 61st annual event will be “A Toyland Christmas.” Grand marshal will be Skipper Free.

A press release from the Jaycees’ Hank Van Slyke reads, “Since the parade is at night, entries are encouraged to have plenty of lights on them. The Jaycees will sponsor the only Santa Claus, who will appear at the end of the parade ...

“First and second place trophies will be awarded in four categories: Marching, General, Commercial and Religious Theme. Bands will receive a participation trophy. Three ‘Judges’ Choice’ trophies will be awarded to the judges’ favorites, and the grand marshal will award a special trophy to the best overall entry.”

Winners will be announced after the parade and trophies can be picked up at R&R Auto supply next week.

For more information, call Van Slyke at 886-4505.
