Story time at the Lutcher
Two classic children’s bedtime tales will come to life on the Lutcher Theater stage at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17.
Using puppetry, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia brings to life Margret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd’s classic tales of two rabbits. In “Goodnight Moon,” Rabbit prepares or postpones going to bed by saying goodnight to everything in its room and imagination. In “The Runaway Bunny,” Bunny makes the decision to run away, which turns into an imaginative journey in which Bunny’s mother always finds a way of bringing Bunny back home.
Adapted from Margaret Wise Brown’s sixty-year-old classic, “Goodnight Moon” is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while “The Runaway Bunny’s” pretend tale of leaving home evokes reassuring responses from his loving mum. Both feature endearing rabbit characters, and the soothing rhythms and dream-like imagery never fail to infuse young readers with a calming sense of security.
Mermaid’s staged adaptation brings a fresh appreciation of the stories and images that have delighted several generations. The hour-long performance follows closely the revered stories from which they are adapted, and features the innovative puppets and original music which have become Mermaid’s trademark.
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia ranks among North America’s most respected theatres for the young, and plays an important ambassadorial role for Nova Scotia and for Canada. The company regularly crosses the continent, and has represented Canada in the United States, Japan, Mexico, Australia, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan.
Mermaid Theatre has earned Export Excellence awards from both the Governments of Canada and of Nova Scotia. Based in the Town of Windsor, Mermaid has performed for more than three million spectators on four continents.
To add to the fun, young patrons are invited to wear their pajamas to the show and children should feel free to bring along their bedtime buddies (stuffed animals, dolls, etc.) There will be lots of photo opportunities and all children who wear their pajamas to the show will be entered into a drawing to receive free copies of the Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny books exclusively autographed by the cast of the show.
This show offers a great opportunity for families to attend the theater together.
Live performances are magical, as well are times spent together experiencing them.
