A humble Worster accepts hometown award
“I’ve had difficulty with this all week,” said a humble Steve Worster, Saturday night at the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce banquet as he accepted the 2009 50th Anniversary Citizen of the Year” award.
Worster is credited by many for putting Bridge City on the map. After leading the Bridge City Cardinals to the state championship in 1966, Worster was named All American. He also took the Texas Longhorns in back to back national championships in 69-70. In March of last year, Worster was named to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
He was uncomfortable with all the accolades. “Seeing my teammates, I want to drag them up here and hug them,” he said. “We did this as a team.”
“This area is so unique,” he said about Bridge City. “I’ve lived in other places. There is no other place I would want to be.”
Also honored was Eric Andrus, owner of Central Office Supply, named Business of the Year and Rickey Land as Ambassador of the Year.
