Students earn scholarships in academic challenge
Orangefield students recently competed in the fifth annual Cypress Challenge Tournament, an academic quiz tournament for high school students hosted by Lamar State College-Orange.
Representing OHS were team members Emily Gilson, David Blanke, Bria Crain, and David Tsan. Mrs. Julie Agee sponsored the students.
Students competed for over $5,000 in scholarships. Other area schools competing included: West Orange-Stark, Sulfur, Vidor, Bridge City, and Hamshire-Fannett.
Orangefield placed 3rd in the tournament with each member receiving a $400 scholarship.
“We were very excited to place 3rd in the tournament,” said Mrs. Agee. “Bridge City was a very competitive team. They worked hard and came back to beat Bridge City by 10 points.”
Mrs. Agee added, “It was fun to go and focus and see that you don’t have to be in a sport or such things to be competitive; you can just use your brain power.”
