To conclude its 40th anniversary celebration, Lamar State College-Orange will present the popular Wayne Toups in a free concert Friday, April 23, to thank Orange County and surrounding areas for their 40 years of support. The opening band, Mingo Fishtrap, will start at 6:30 p.m. and play until 8. Toups will start at 8:30.

One of the most commercially successful Cajun artists, Toups has recorded with major labels like Polygram-Mercury, having released eleven albums throughout his career. A native of Crowley, La., was the first Cajun performer to achieve the monumental accomplishment of charting several cuts on Billboard’s Top Album charts with his “Back to the Bayou” release. His distinctive instrumental style has also been heard on No. 1 country hits from Nashville musicians such as Mark Chesnutt, Alan Jackson, Clay Walker, Sammy Kershaw and Garth Brooks just to name a few.

The “Take My Hand” music video was awarded the Silver Lone Star Remy Award for Best Concert Performance Video. “Sweet Jolene” has appeared on MTV as a video. Other tracks have been heard on both movie and television soundtracks. Additional distinguished awards include induction into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame, who also honored Toups by voting his recording of “Late in Life” with the Song of the Year award. Add to all of these accolades his undeniable charisma as a rocker and you can now understand why he has earned the title of “The Cajun Springsteen” better known as “Le Boss.”

The concert will be on LSC-O’s campus on the side facing Second street. Lawn chairs are welcome. As an added bonus, guests will have a chance to register to win tickets for floor seating at the Carrie Underwood concert on May 10 at Ford Park. For more information, call 882-3097.

Also, LSC-O will host a Safety, Health, and Wellness Fair Thursday, April 29, from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the LSC-O Student Center. There will be door prizes, snacks and booths with information and services that benefit students, faculty and the community.
