From Staff Reports

It was standing-room only at Bobcat baseball stadium in Orangefield Friday night for the grand finale of an exciting Dist. 21-3A. The state’s 4th ranked Bobcats and 8th ranked Cardinals went head-to-head and into extra innings before Orangefield’s Josh Watson cracked a Matt Hicks pitch and scored Chase Angelle from second to take it 4-3.

Starting pitchers were left handers Forest Zoch for the Cardinals and Angelle for the Bobcats. Zoch went 6.5 innings, Angelle went the distance pitching seven innings, giving up seven hits and allowing just two walks to go along with two strikeouts.

But going into extra innings both teams pulled out their big guns. Matt Hicks took the mound for Bridge City and Jace Statum came in for Orangefield. Statum received the win on the hill. He gave up two hits and a strikeout in the last inning.

The shoot-out ended in the bottom of the 8th inning after the Cardinals left two runners stranded in the top of the frame. With two outs and two men on base  Bobcat third baseman Josh Watson nailed a Hicks offering to score a runner on a Cardinal error and bringing the dual to a sudden end.

For the Bobcats, Angelle, Statum, Jacob Felts, Quinton Evans and Derrick Evans helped out at the plate with two hits a piece. Jonathon DeRamus played an outstanding defensive game with two spectacular plays.

The undefeated Bobcats claimed the Dist. 21-3A Championship. The Cardinals go into the playoffs as the second place team.

The Bobcats have scored an amazing 63 points this season. The Cardinal’s, 8-2, only losses this season came from Orangefield.

TheRecordLive commends both teams for an outstanding season. Congratulations to Bobcat Coach Jeff Bennett and Cardinal Coach Chad Landry. We’ll be with you in the playoffs.
