W.R. “Jack” Newsom Sr.
W.R. “Jack” Newsom Sr., 86, of Bridge City passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010, at Dubuis – St. Mary’s Hospital in Port Arthur. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Bridge City with the Rev. Steve Leger officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City. On Monday, visitation will begin at 8 a.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. also at the funeral home.
Born in De Queen, Ark. on Jan. 1, 1924, Jack was the son of Lewis W. Newsom and Myrtle (Webb) Newsom. He was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church and former Faithful Navigator of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree in Bridge City. Jack was also former Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and OCAW Local 423 for 35 years. Jack served four years in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He retired from Gulf Oil after 41 years, where he worked as an operator.
Jack is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Elizabeth “Bess” Newsom of Bridge City; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tony Bramblett of Bridge City; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Carol Newsom Jr. of Bridge City; and daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Brian Tweekrem of Lumberton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Tony Jr., Jennifer, Eric and Rebeka Bramblett, Richard III, Dustin, Terese and Dalee Newsom, Brittney Delossantos and Kourtney Weston; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Olean Sonnier of Bridge City.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tony Bramblett Jr., Eric Bramblett, Richard Newsom III, Dustin Newsom, Robert Newsom and Wayne Newsom. Honorary pallbearers will be Gavin Bramblett, Kevin Weston, Ricky Wagnon and Lane Dupree.
