Mustangs surprise ‘Cats, Cardinals take down Huffman
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs surprised the state’s fourth ranked Orangefield Bobcats with 4-2 victory in game one of the regional quarterfinal round. Zane Anderson got the win on the hill for the Mustangs.
The two Dist. 21-3A contenders will meet again Saturday for game two in the best of three series at West Brook High School in Beaumont. Game Two will begin at 4 p.m and Game Three, if necessary, will follow.
The Bridge City Cardinals came from behind to plaster Huffman 12-5 in Game One of their quarterfinal series. Matt Hicks went the distance for the win on the hill for Big Red.
Bridge City had a six run fifth inning to put the game away. Game Two of the series moves to New Caney at 3 p.m.
The Cardinals were down 4-0 in early innings before Cardinal bats totaled 12 hits. Luke Rhodes was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI’s and scored twice. Cameron Dishon was 2-for-3 in the box and Zach Smith was 2-for-4 with an RBI and crossed home plate twice.
Mitchel Hubbard and Forest Zoch both plated two runners and scored two runs. Evan Boren had an RBI and scored twice while Joe Robertson smacked 2 RBI’s and scored from second base. Pitcher Matt Hicks also scored.
