Shooting death in Orange involves OPD officer
O’Reilly Auto Parts located on 16th Street in Orange was the scene of a shooting death this afternoon around 5 p.m.
James Whitehead, 28, of West Orange was allegedly shot in the chest by an off duty Orange Police Officer during an altercation between the officer and man.
Witnesses said a customer was arguing with the manager and getting belligerent while attempting to return merchandise.
The officer, identified as Capt. Robert Arnold by an employee, was apparently in the store with his daughter. According to witnesses, Arnold told the customer he didn’t like the man using obscene language in front of the girl.
Witnesses said the officer and Whitehead went outside. The man was shot during the altercation.
Whitehead was transported to Christus-St. Elizabeth in Beaumont by Acadian Ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Orange Police Chief Sam Kittrell said the investigation will be overseen by the Texas Rangers so the OPD doesn’t have to investigate a shooting involving one of their own officers. Vidor Police Department, Pinehurst Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office are also participating in the investigation.
