The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears will host the Nacogdoches Golden Dragons for their home opener on Friday night. The 2010 Bears got a taste of victory Thursday defeating the Goose Creek Memorial Patriots, 24-14, in their season debut in Baytown. Now the Bears (1-0) are ready for more.

New and improved Battlin’ Bears under second year head coach Randy Crouch unleashed an offensive attack that rolled up 346 yards. Running back Tevin Jones rambled for 109 yards on nine carries that included a 63-yard second quarter touchdown. Quarterback Hunter Gonzales went to the air for another 148 yards on 14 attempts.

Leading 10-7 at the half, Gonzales found receiver Zack Sonnier for a spectacular third quarter 58-yard touchdown. Sonnier totaled 109 yards on three catches in the contest.
Bear defense ripped up the Pats all night sacking quarterback Chris Cowen six times and holding Memorial to just 170 total yards.

Scoring first in the season opener with a 23-yard field goal by Garhett Bonneaux; Bears took the lead early in the first quarter. The Patriots jumped ahead 7-3 in the second quarter but it was short lived. On LC-M’s next possession Jones sailed down the sideline for the 63-yard touchdown. Bonneaux’s kick was good and the Bears went into intermission with the lead.

The Bears capitalized on a fumble recovery on the Patriots 27-yard line that ended eight plays later when Gonzales punched it in from the goal line to up the score 24-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Scoring again in the fourth quarter, for the Patriots it was too little too late. The Dist. 20-4A Battlin’ Bears are ready to take on the Dragons at home this week.
