First-year Lamar University men’s tennis coach Scott Shankles gets his initial look at the Cardinals in competition this weekend as Lamar participates in the Rain’ Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La.

“I’m really excited about this first tournament,” Shankles said. “I am eager to see how the guys are going to compete.”

Lamar’s Rob Lee is the No. 2 seed in the Flight A singles competition. Denis Ermilov will also represent Lamar in Flight A. Lamar’s Marton Horvath is the No. 2 seed in Flight B. Lamar’s Carlos Valdenebro and Diego Snyder are also in Flight B. In Flight C, Lamar will be represented by Devin Harley and Dusan Savkovic.

Lamar will have two doubles teams in the First Flight as Ermilov and Lee will form a tandem as will Horvath and Savkovic.

“There’s a lot of energy and enthusiasm right now,” Shankles said. Everybody is working hard and looking forward to playing this weekend.”

Shankles, who takes over for Greg Davis, inherited a program that won just one Southland Conference match over the last three seasons.

“I’m trying to emphasize intensity and pride,” Shankles said. “That’s something I believe in.”
The tournament begins Friday and runs through Sunday.
