Lamar University men’s tennis players Denis Ermilov and Marton Horvath advanced in the winners bracket on the first day of the Ragin’ Cajun Invitational.

Ermilov advanced in Flight A with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Shayne Wall of Tulane. Horvath posted a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Jordan Girdley of LSU in Flight B.

In other action involving Lamar players, second-seeded Rob Lee of LU was upset by Adam Bernstein of Tulane 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 in Flight A. Lamar’s Diego Snyder dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Tulane’s Takuma Ohashi in Flight B. In Flight C, Susan Savkocic of the Cardinals fell to Louisiana’s Frankie Hoak6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

In doubles play, Lamar’s Ermilov and Lee combined for a 9-7 win over Ted Nilsson and Elliot Minvielle of Louisiana in the First Flight. In Second Flight play, Snyder teamed up with Lamar teammate Carlos Valdenebro for an 8-6 triumph over Ernesto Laborda and Ramon Romero of Oachita Baptist.

“”I was very pleased with our effort and fight today. We had good results with Dennis and Marton reaching the semifinals in singles and both doubles teams of Ermilov/Lee and Snyder/Valdenebro advancing to semis,” first-year Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. Diego and Carlos’ opponents for semis defaulted, so they will play in the finals on Sunday. I couldn’t be happier with our first day results and I know all the guys are motivated to have a better (Saturday).”
