Greg Burkett, known to most as Greg the Trainer, has been training for over 25 years.
“Obesity has always been my pet project.” He said.

That’s why coming up with the challenge for Orange County to loose 2011 pounds between Jan. 1 and April 1 was just a natural fit for him.

“What I’m saying is that I’ve always worked with people that are heavy weight because I can appreciate and understand the health ramifications that come with it. You’ve got Cloistral problems, you have hypertension, you have diabetes type II to mention just a few of the things that are totally reversible from weight loss in the gym,” Burkett said.

He’s new in the area – he’s been in North Vidor for a little over a year now – and been with Anytime Fitness for about nine months. Yet, this is something he plans on doing for the people of Orange County for years to come.

“This is a way for me to give back to the community…I’m a trainer and I enjoy working with and helping people with their heath.”

“I know I’ve had a lot of people close to me thought the years that have been very, very ill from having the weight on them,” he said.

The cost of what he’s doing doesn’t seem to matter much to Burkett financially. People in the program are provided with a personal trainer, counseling, dietary and all the stuff that goes with a proper weight loss program.

Currently, 13 active students are in the classes being offered with Monday starting a special class for individuals in the school systems.

“My ultimate goal is to help people with life style and decisions being made with their health and stuff that is normally not available to people. It’s normally very, very expensive. Most people cannot afford and it’s not covered by insurance. What my goal is to teach people self-management to be able to work out properly, to put muscles on to burn calories long term and for proper eating habits and dietary needs,” he said.

“I’ll get you started on a seven-day meal planner, so … to get you searching in the right places that’s necessary,” he said. “We provide certain types of food as well. The manor to which to eat though out the course of the days time and cretin things you can do to work on to keep your body healthy.”

One way to keep at your work-out goal is pay attention to what you are doing, he said. Something a lot of people don’t do is when they go out to eat to nice restaurants, they think they have better quality of food …they are just an expensive “McDonald’s” at the end of the day.

Also, don’t eat all that food when it’s brought out. Enough food is given to split between several to eat on for a legitimate meal. There is no law saying that all the food has to be eaten immediately. Ask for a doggie bag, put half of the meal in it and then put what is not eaten in the bag. By doing this ensures lunch for the next day. Even sharing with someone is a good way to go.

Another positive about working out is in ones self-esteem. Self-esteem is a feeling of personal worth. It is important to be able to value yourself regardless of your current state of personal achievement, beauty, age or intelligence. Self-esteem creates the foundation for a full life, great relationships, and a feeling of well-being.

“Exercise and eating healthy affect general health and the whole being,” Dal Moreau III, LPC, Licensed Professional Counselor, of Orange, said.

“Exercise is often used as part of the package for treating depression but it doesn’t cure it, he said. “When one is depressed there is a decreased serotonin in the brain and when one does vergers exercise this stimulates and increases the serotonin levels in the brain just as medication made to help depression does.”
