A man was taken into custody tonight after leading local officers on a high speed chase that ended when the white Ford Crown Victoria he was driving was involved in several accidents.

Joseph Leroy Jarrard, 32, is facing charges of felony evading and felony DWI with a child passenger.

Officers took Jarrard into custody after they say he was combative. They transported him to Orange Baptist Hospital before taking him to jail.

Jarrard was driving with a 2-month-old and two other children as well a woman in his car, and struck several vehicles along the way before crashing into a semi-truck in the chase which began at about 2:45 PM Thursday.

Officers say the driver of the Crown Victoria was involved in a wreck and left the scene of the accident near I-10 and FM 1442 in Orange.

Deputies saw the man driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed, and when they tried to stop him, the driver began heading west on I-10 at speeds of more than 110 miles an hour.

The driver was involved in another accident, then exited the interstate in Rose City and began heading east on IH-10. Deputies continued to pursue the driver as he exited at FM 1136. The vehicle then traveled on the service road until it neared Highway 62 and struck a semi-truck at about 3 p.m.

Several EMS units responded to check out drivers and passengers in the vehicles that were struck.

No one was seriously hurt in any of the accidents. Assisting in the chase and accident were officers from Orange Police Department, Vidor Police Deptartment, Rose City Marshall’s office and Texas DPS.
