A natural gas well in Village Creek State Park, in Lumberton exploded Friday afternoon about 1:15 PM after a gas vapor began to escape the well, which triggered a flash fire, follwed by an explosion.

Emergency personnel have been in communication with four workers who were on the well when it exploded, according to State Troopers. Authorities met with three of the workers and spoke with the fourth, none of which were injured in the explosion.

No evacuation was called and there was said to be no threat to the surrounding areas. The land, off Alma Rd. in the park, is owned by the state.

John Griffin, Vice President of Choice Exploration, out of Arlington, said a contractor owns the rig, but it was Choice Exploration’s project.

Boots and Coots, experts in well intervention and control service out of Houston, will be assisting with the accident.

Authorities will not allow anybody near the site.
