The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce announced the Students of the Month for May at their monthly networking coffee on May 10 at MCT Credit Union located at 4837 Highway 87 South in Orange. Jessica Franklin was chosen as the Bridge City Student of the Month and Devan Ficken was chosen as the Orangefield Student of the Month.

Devan Ficken is the daughter of Scott and Karen Ficken and is ranked 20th out of her graduating class of 132 with a grade point average of 3.91 on a 4.0 college scale. Ficken is a member of TAFE, Library Club, Uprising member, Thespian Troupe/Drama Club, National Honor Society, UIL Prose, One Act Play and the Academic Challenge Team.

Her Honors include being the devotional leader for her senior year and has led the prayer at each Bobcat home football game from her sophomore to senior year, receiving the Big O award in IPC, English, and theatre. She also placed fifth in State UIL Prose Reading in 2010, received honorable mention for the All Star Cast for Steel Magnolias in 2009 and for Look Homeward Angel in 2011 was selected to a member of the State One Act Play Honor Crew.

Ficken has also served her community by participating in the World Changers Mission Camp and Blue Santa in 2009, Student Life Missions, spending time with the elderly at Orange Villa, serving at the Catholic Charities’ Hospitality Center in Port Arthur and the Relay for Life in 2010 and has volunteered as a vacation Bible school Teacher since 2007.

She plans on attending Lamar State College Orange for two years before transferring to Lamar University Beaumont to work on her Bachelor’s degree in Teaching High School History and perhaps Theatre.

Jessica Franklin is the daughter of Garey and Jennifer Franklin and is ranked fourth out of 177 students in her graduating class with a Grade Point Average of 4.75 on a 5.0 scale. Franklin is a two year state qualifier in cross country, a two year member of the Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Cross Country Team, received All-District Honorable Mention in Softball, was named the Channel 12 Athlete of the week and was the 2010 recipient of the Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society Award for Outstanding Proficiency in American history.

Franklin currently is a member of the National Honor Society, Executive Student Council, Accounting UIL and Spanish Club and has volunteered for Spina Bidida Association of Houston/Gulf Coast, tutoring elementary school students, painted the school sidewalk for graduation, works volleyball camps for fourth through ninth graders, raised money working concession stands for a variety of causes and also participates in numerous events and activities for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Franklin plans to attend Lamar University on the Mirabeau Scholarship to obtain a degree in Exercise Science. She then plans to continue her education by attending a school specializing in Physical therapy so she can become a physical therapist.

Both Franklin and Ficken received a certificate honoring them for their accomplishments as well as gift certificates from Wal-Mart, Firestone Community Federal Credit Union, The Ice Cream Club, Tiger Rock Martial Arts of Bridge City, Sabine Federal Credit Union and COS Printing.
