Bridge City takes Game One on the chin, 8-1
MAGNOLIA- The Bridge City Cardinals fell 8-1 in Game One of the Region III
semifinal series of the state baseball playoffs against the No. 6 ranked Robinson Rockets at Magnolia
West High School in Magnolia on Thursday night.
Robinson jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and increased their lead with a four run second inning to go up 5-0. Hayden Guidry came in to relieve junior pitcher Jacob Lemoine who got the start on the hill for Bridge City.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Brandon Simoneaux singled to right field and with two outs Matt Menard singled moving Simoneaux to third. Simoneaux was sent home to score courtesy of a balk by the Robinson pitcher ending the frame 5-1.
Guidry and the Cardinal defense held the Rockets scoreless through the fourth inning. But Robinson increased their lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the frame after a solo home run and a flurry of hits. Guidry came out of the game relieved by third baseman Preston Pittman half way into the inning.
Robinson held the lead in to win Game One 8-1.
Bridge City collected six hits by: Zack Smith, Dylan Mulhollan and Simoneaux who each singled. Menard had two singles.
Game Two pressure will likely once again fall on senior left hand pitcher Forest Zoch. Zoch pulled out Bridge City last week in the same situation against Giddings. After falling to Giddings in Game One, Big Red came back to win Game Two and Three to advance to the semifinals.
Game Two of the series will begin Saturday at 4:30 p.m at a different location, Magnolia High School also in Magnolia.
