Texas educators know crafting a lesson plan both that is interesting and still covers the required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills is no day at the beach.

But a new set of lesson plans on the dangers of marine debris by the Adopt-A-Beach Program at the Texas General Land Office is sure to bring a little sunshine to any teacher’s day.

“These lesson plans are complete, fun and easy to use,” said Renee Tuggle, Adopt-A-Beach coordinator. “The whole goal is to provide educators with a quick way to make kids think about the environmental menace of marine debris, how they fit in, and what they can do.”

The six individualized Adopt-A-Beach lesson plans guide students and teachers to a better understanding of coastal issues through fun and challenging activities that can be accomplished in thirty to forty-five minutes. Each lesson plan was developed with grade-appropriate Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Each lesson plan is featured in color for the instructor’s use. The corresponding journal pages have been composed in black and white for easy printing and copying.

The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Program is one of the most successful volunteer efforts in the nation. The goal of the Adopt-A-Beach Program is to not only remove trash from Texas beaches and waterways but to also increase public awareness of the problems of marine debris and beach litter.

Since 1986, more than 423,000 volunteers have removed more than 8,100 tons of trash from the Texas coast. That’s enough to fill up a line of dump trucks 90 miles long.
