Arthur John Tuorila Jr.
Arthur John Tuorila Jr. 85 passed away on Wednesday, March 28, at his home in Newton. He was born on Nov. 22, 1926 in Sumrall, MS. to Addie Reid and Arthur John Tuorila Sr.
The family moved to Wiergate, and his father managed Wier Long Leaf Lumber Company until it closed during A. J. Jr.’s senior year in high school, and he graduated from Orange High School. He was a resident of Orange for 30 years prior to living in Newton for the past 33 years.
A. J., sometimes called “Jr.”, served his country during World War II in the U. S. Navy. He was on the USS Windsor in the South Pacific. After his wartime service, he married the love of his life, Ola Irene Walthall on Christmas Eve 1949. Within a few years they settled in Orange, and A. J. worked at American Bridge, US Steel wearing many hats before beginning a long career in accounting.
He retired from American Bridge in 1986 and retired from Campbell Oil in Newton in 1993. He is a member of Assembly of God Church in Newton and has been a deacon for many years and secretary-treasurer for 33 years. He has always been a tower of strength and full of wisdom and caring. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him and will continue to be known as a truly good man.
Arthur John Tuorila Jr. was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Ola Irene Walthall Tuorila, his parents and sisters, Helen Tuorila Hartman and Elsa Tuorila Akins.
He is survived by his daughter Teresa Tuorila Spell Fullen and husband, Don E. Fullen of Galveston; grandson, Todd Christopher Spell and Tracy Jenkins; grandson, Timothy Scott Spell; step-grandson, Lyndon Brian Fullen and wife, Jana Fullen; step-granddaughter, Marie Alaina Fullen and husband, Jason Todd Risner and 10 great grandchildren and another on the way.
Last but not least, other survivors include both his and his wife’s close extended relatives, nieces and nephews, many who reside in Newton, and all of whom have been very special in his life.
A gathering of family and friends will be on Friday, March 30, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home in Newton.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 31, at 2:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Newton City Cemetery.
