Starks, La. Plans 20th annual Mayhaw Fest

The 20th annual Starks Mayhaw Festival is slated for the weekend of May 17-19. The festival was nominated for the Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 festivals by the SW Louisiana CVB, and won the award April 16.

The festival will include vendors from all areas, who will be selling such items as food, crafts, games, carnival rides, entertainment, and much more.

Kicking off the festivities will be the Starks Mayhaw Pageant, Saturday, May 5. The pageant will be held in the Starks High School Auditorium, located at 137 Hwy. 109 S. The pageant starts at 10:00 am.

The tourism dept. will be serving biscuits and mayhaw jelly, May 8, at the welcome center on IH-10 in Vinton, during National Tourism Week.

The festival grounds will open Thursday, May 17, at 4:00 pm., with entertainment. A talent show is slated for 7:30 pm followed by other entertainment. Friday’s schedule starts with a bike parade at 3:00 pm, with line-up to begin at 2:15. For entry forms, call Alaina Leleux at 337-764-6316. Entertainment will follow

Other activities include a mayhaw jelly judging contest, biscuits, mayhaw jelly and churned butter will be served Saturday, May 19, at 8:30 am, followed by a jelly making demo. A domino tournament will begin at 9:00 am at the Lions Building, 4743 Evangeline Hwy.

Starks Volunteer Firefighters will be selling mayhaw trees at the festival as well.
