Bridge City Chamber Ambassador Christy Khoury presented Emily Blanke the Orangefield Student of the Month award for December. Emily was joined by her parents, John and Marla Blanke.

The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce recently announced the Students of the Month for December at their monthly networking coffee held at Bridge City High School. Shanna Miller was chosen as the Bridge City Student of the Month and Emily Blanke was chosen as the Orangefield Student of the Month.

Shanna Miller is the daughter of Don and Debbie Miller and is ranked eleventh out of her graduating class of 165 with a grade point average of 4.38 on a 5.0 scale. Shanna is a member of the National Honor Society, Anime Club – Director of Activities, and Drama Club – 2010 Secretary. Awards include being on the Honor Roll from 2010-2012, U.I.L. Best Actress, District 2011 and 2012, All Star Cast – District 2010, Literary Criticism State Qualifying Team, Prose Interpretation Team and Creative Writing Team. Honors in Art include 2011 Finalist and 2012 Blue Ribbon at the Houston Livestock Show, Annual Art Exhibition: 2010 •1st Place; 2011 • 4th Place; and 2012 • 3rd Place Portfolio. Shanna designed costumes and storyboards for short film “Megiddo”, was a 2012 National Finalist Video Game Creation Gold Key Winner and a Nickelodeon Show of Your Show Contest 10th Place National winner in 2009. Shanna has been involved in community service as a volunteer at the Bridge City Heritage Festival and working with Vacation Bible School at the Fellowship Church of Christ.

Shanna plans to get a four-year college degree, taking classes in video game design, animation, film and illustration as well as classes that will help her market her work outside of the corporate area.

Emily Blanke is the daughter of John and Marla Blanke and is ranked fifth out of 116 students in her graduating class with a Grade Point Average of 3.96 on the college 4.0 scale. Emily is Student Council-Historian, TAFE – Historian, Band Drumline-Secretary as well as a member of Interact, NHS, Library Club, Spirit Club, Cross Country, Social Studies-UIL, Uprising, a Class Officer, and Academic Challenge. Emily’s honors include Scholastic All District and Varsity Letter in Track and Cross Country, Perfect Attendance, Big O Award for Honor Spanish 2, Honors English 3, DIM, Bravo Award, Regional Cross Country Qualifier 2010,2011, UIL 2nd Place Team in Social Studies, Rotary Club Scholastic Excellence and Orangefield Highest Honors. Emily has given to her community with participation in Julie Richardson Procter RIBBON 5k Run/Walk, helping with local Eagle Scout’s Project – spreading woodchips at a church as well as spreading mulch and doing yard work at First Presbyterian Orange Church. Emily also cleaned church member’s yards–one per week last summer with her youth group. She has worked Shangri La Fall and Spring Festivals, Relay for Life, taught children’s class at church on Wednesday nights, planted Veteran’s Day Flowers with Student Council, helped set up flags for Veteran’s day with Interact, served on Christian Education Committee at Church and Mission work last summer also with her youth group.

Emily plans to attend Baylor University and major in mathematics.

Both Shanna and Emily received a certificate honoring them for their accomplishments as well as gift certificates from Wal-Mart, Geaux Mail, The Classy Peacock, Tiger Rock Martial Arts of Bridge City, Sabine Federal Credit Union, COS Printing and David Self Ford.
