Students of Rachel Choate at Little Cypress Intermediate School hosted parents, staff members, and community supporters on Friday, March 28, for the ribbon-cutting for the first stage of their “Stay and Play Recreational Area.” The play area is adapted for special needs students and is being built with grants from businesses and individuals throughout southeast Texas. School nurse, Kelly Meadows, introduced representatives from the organizations whose contributions made the play area possible. The LCM CISD Maintenance Department constructed the play area.

Stage one of the “Stay and Play” project includes a six-foot coated chain link fence around a 40 X 40 foot area outside of the Life Skills Classroom on the west side of the campus. Although during this stage of the process the play area is covered with grass and sand, subsequent stages will include an all-weather, rubberized surface within the fenced area with a six-foot wide by 20-foot long sidewalk from the drive to the recreational area. An awning will cover the entire play area, and sensory stimulating equipment will be permanently installed.
