OC Appraisal Dist. to hold silent auction

There will be a silent auction of surplus equipment held from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, May 8 at the Orange County Appraisal District. Property can be inspected Tuesday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The winning bids will be contacted Wednesday afternoon and will have 24 hours to pick up the equipment.

OC Master Gardeners to meet May 9

The monthly meeting of the Orange County Master Gardeners will be held at 6:30 p.m.

on Thursday, May 9 at Cormier Park, located at 8435 FM 1442 in Orangefield.

The park is located about mid-way between IH10 and FM 105.

Take Exit 869 from IH10 and head south.

It is on the right just across the railroad tracks.

Mr. Sauber, a local citrus grower, will be doing a citrus grafting demonstration during the meeting.

All those interested are welcome to come.

Prior to the meeting will be a pot luck supper which will start at 6 p.m.

Please do not arrive any earlier than 5:45 p.m.

as the gates will be locked.

American Legion election set for May 9

Elections for American Legion Post 49 2013-2014 officers will be held on Thursday, May 9. All members are asked to come out and vote and let their voice be heard. All members with 2013 paid dues are eligible to vote. Post 49 is located at 108 Green Ave. in Orange.

BCHS Alumni Assoc. to meet May 9

The next meeting of the Bridge City High School Alumni Association will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9 at Bridge City High School. Events for the 2013 school year will be discussed.

Shangri La takes part in National Public Gardens Day

Visit Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center on May 10, 2013 for free admission on National Public Gardens Day. This is a national day of celebration to raise awareness of America’s public gardens and their important role in promoting environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education in communities nationwide. Admission will be waived for Shangri La with presentation of an online voucher (Outpost Tour fees are not waived). OF Athletic Booster Club to host athletic banquet

Orangefield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting their athletic banquet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 13 in the Jr.High Gym. Tickets can be purchased in the athletic secretary’s office for $12, high school athletes are free. Tickets will NOT be available at the door. All Orangefield athletes will be honored. OC Retired Teachers to meet May 13

The Orange County Retired Teachers Association will hold its final meeting of the term at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 13, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, located at 401 37th St. in Orange. Nancy Hooker will direct the installation of officers for the 2013-2014 meeting year. The members will participate in the annual White Elephant Gift Exchange. A covered dish luncheon will be served.

New Anointing Church to host gospel singing

Area residents are invited to an old fashioned gospel singing at 7 p.m. Friday, May 31 at New Anointing Church, located at 10681 N. Hwy 87 in Orange (about seven miles north of Northway Shopping Center, on the left).

Those who sing with a tape/cd or sing live or play an instrument are encouraged to bring it to the singing.

Refreshments will be served after the singing.

St. Paul UMC selling bricks for Prayer Garden

St. Paul United Methodist Church is continuing plans for its Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Prayer Garden by paving the garden with a brick walkway. The church is selling bricks that will be engraved with a personal note of the buyer’s choice. These bricks would provide a special way honor family and friends with a history at St. Paul’s. Each brick costs $30. Order forms are located in the St. Paul UMC reception area or can be found on stpaulfamily.org. For more information, call the St. Paul office at 409-735-5546.

WOS Elementary to hold Kindergarten Round-up

West Orange – Stark Elementary will hold Kindergarten Round Up Thursday, May 16 from 9 - 11 a.m. in the WO-S Elementary Library. In order to enroll a student for 2013-2014 classes, parents should bring the following documents: student birth certificate, student social security card, student immunization record and proof of residence.

West Orange – Cove students who currently attend North Early Learning Center are automatically enrolled.

Eagles to host monthly barbecue May 16

The Fraternal Orders of Eagles, Sabine Aerie 2523, located at 803 N 28th St, Orange, will host their monthly barbecue on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The menu includes brisket, baked beans, potato salad, bread, cookie, BBQ sauce and trimming on the side at $8 a plate. Dine in, pick up or delivery is offered. OC AgriLife to host canning classes

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Orange County is holding a class that covers canning, freezing and drying Vegetables. The Backyard Basics programs support healthy living through home-based food production, preparation and preservation. This class is being held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the City of Orange Central Fire Station on the 2nd floor (501 N 7th St). The fee to attend is $20. Door prizes will be given and are provided by Farmers Mercantile. Registration is required to attend as class size is limited to 15 participants. David Ess/BC Strutters Annual Golf Tournament set for May 18

David Ess and the Bridge City Strutters will be hosting their annual golf tournament on Saturday, May 18, at Belle Oakes Golf Course in Beaumont. The tournament will have a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. (sign-in will be at 7:30a.m.) and will be an 18 hole, four person scramble with prizes awarded.

Entry fee is $200 per team, which includes the green fee, cart, food, drink and prizes. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100, which includes a sign at the golf course and an ad in the Strutters Spring Revue Program. The deadline for hole sponsorship is Monday, April 15.

WOS HS Athletic Banquet to be held May 21

The West Orange-Stark High School Athletic Banquet, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday May 21, at the WOS High School Cafeteria and will be catered by Moncla’s.

Male and female athletes from the current school year 2012-2013 will be honored.

Each athlete will receive one free ticket. Parents and other family members may purchase tickets for $7.00 at the West Orange-Stark Athletic Office by May 17. For more information, please contact the Athletic Department at 882-5530.

Ladies Auxiliary to VFW taking member dues

The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 2775 are making plans to attend State Convention. National moved their convention to an earlier date, so Texas had to do the same. The Ladies Auxiliary is now collecting “Early Bird Dues” for the fiscal year 2014 ‘Parade of Transmittals’ at State Convention in June 12-16. Members who have let their dues lapse and wish to reinstate OR remain continuous may send their dues to Jeanette Clark, Membership Chairman, at 3705 Martin St, Orange, TX 77630 or Patricia Kemp, Treasurer, at 4700 London Circle, Orange, TX 77632.

Please make checks payable to LAVFW Post 2775 in the amount of $18. If you are a cancer patient or know of anyone in the Nursing Home or very ill, please contact Jeanette at 409-883-0264. The auxiliary pays these dues with the utmost discretion.

Mighty Mustang golf tourney to be held June 24

Mighty Mustang GFW Golf Tournament will be held at Babe Zaharias Golf Course beginning at 8 a.m. on June 24. Four man scramble costing $50 per player or $200 per team.

The Might Mustang GFW is a 501(c)(3)non-profit corp., supporting extra-curricular activities and academics at West Orange-Stark CISD.

Zummo links, sodas and water will be supplied.

Players can bring their own cooler and beverage. Long drive, closest to hole prizes.

There will be an auction on signed helmets from Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Alabama, LSU and the Seattle Seahawks by Earl Thomas. If schedule permitting, Earl Thomas will be in attendance.

Local AAUW to host book drive

The Orange Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is beginning their annual book drive to collect “gently used” books for their scholarship fund. All books, fiction, non-fiction, hardbound or paper back are acceptable. Books may be delivered to the Mann Insurance Agency located at 1505 Park Avenue at 15th Street during regular business hours. If unable to deliver the books, you may call 886-5739 or 886-2194 to arrange for pickup.

KOCB sells Litter Button banners

Keep Orange County Beautiful hopes to sell 50 banners to local businesses for $25 each promoting their “Litter Button” on their Website: http://www.kocb.org. Their hope is that each banner will generate 10 hits of the “Litter Button,” which would mean 500 litterers in the State of Texas would be notified by the Texas Department of Transportation of their illegal activity.

If you see someone littering, take down the time, date and place of the littering and the license plate of the vehicle. Report the activity by going to http://www.kocb.org and hit the litter button. Fill in the information which is then sent to TxDOT.

The offending litterer will be sent a letter reminding them it is illegal to litter in the State of Texas. They will also receive a litter bag for their car and a Don’t Mess With Texas sticker.

Boy Scouts to host annual flag fundraiser

The Boy Scouts of Troop 62 is now accepting subscriptions for commemorative flag displays in and around North Orange (near Hwy. 87 and Meeks Drive) between IH-10 and South Teal Road. The 3’ by 5’ flags will be displayed on the five flag days of the year (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Patriots Day [9/11] and Veterans Day). The flags will be displayed no later than 9 a.m. on the commemorative day, picked up before dusk and stored until the next flag day.

An initial $75 tax deductible donation ($50 for renewals) is required. Money orders and checks must be received 14 days prior to posting day in order to ensure timely service. All proceeds go to support Scout activities and programs throughout the year.

Orange Community Band to meet every Thursday

The Orange Community Band rehearses every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, located at 4103 Meeks Drive in Orange. They are in need of players for the following sections; flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, and percussion, but ALL are welcome! The band performs Christmas, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day concerts. At least one traditional band concert is performed annually.
