W. Wayland Payne, 76, of Orange, passed Friday, Aug. 23, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Conroe. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange, with Pastor Daniel Rose of Community Church officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City.

Visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 p.m., Thursday, and again on Friday morning from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Born in Jacksonville, TX, on Aug. 19, 1937, Wayland was the son of William David “Bill” Payne I and Bessie Laverne (Courtney) Payne. He served in the US Air Force Reserve and worked for a brief time at Firestone. For over 50 years he was involved in the family car dealership, Payne Motor Company, serving as owner after his father’s passing. He was a member of Community Church, the American Motorcycle Association, Grass Roots, American Tea Party, and the NRA. He loved cars and riding motorcycles, and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma Jean (Fisher) Payne; sister and brother-in-law, Colleen and Ray Cumbie and son-in-law, George Alexander.

Wayland is survived by his sister, Linda Crump and husband, James of Orange; daughters, Katherine Elaine Thrailkille of Orange and Kimberly Laverne Alexander of Sweetlake, LA; son, William David Payne II and wife, Stacee of Orange and grandchildren, Sara Thrailkille Anderson and husband, Chip of Pleasanton, CA, Katy Thrailkille of Pasadena, Wesley Thrailkille of Orange, Derrick Payne of Orange, Kara Marcantel of Vinton, Brandee Payne-Meguess and husband, Justin of Orange, and Cassee Payne of Orange.

He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Dylan and Dystan Payne, Jayce and Jordan Droddy, Cole Doucet Marcantel, Paisley Payne, and Trey Anderson and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. The family would also like to specially recognize Ms. Clara Murphy.
