Cubs for a Cure, an Orange County Relay for Life team from Little Cypress Elementary in Orange, will return to the American Cancer Society (ACS) signature event for their sixth consecutive year on May 4.

The ACS Relay for Life event allows individuals and teams to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember those who have lost their battle with the disease, and fundraise to find a cure.

Shari Lyons, a 2012 Orange County Relay for Life Chairman, is a member of Cubs for a Cure. The team has raised over $10,000 in their five years of participation. It is one of many school teams, as well as business, family, and church teams which will relay at “Relay for Life Goes Hollywood.”

The event will be held at Bridge City High School’s Larry Ward Stadium from 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 4 to 6:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5.

The Little Cypress Elementary (LCE) Cubs for a Cure, is comprised of teachers and staff, and their families. They are co-captained by Dianna Wimberley and Lori Perry.

Like previous years, the LCE Cubs for a Cure began organizing in the fall.

Lyons said the Cubs fundraise primarily through t-shirt sales which are available to all teams.

The team has also held additional fundraisers which have included garage sales and snack sales.

Fundraisers can benefit teams or individuals, as each member of an eight to 20-member Relay team is required to fundraise $100.

At the Relay for Life May event, the Cubs for a Cure remain all night.

They participate in the various entertaining Relay activities which are held. They include cake walks, races, crazy laps, a hula hoop contest, line dancing, and other games.

The team also participates in the Luminary Ceremony which remembers individuals who have lost their battle with cancer and honors those who are fighting and/or have survived.

Thirty-nine Orange County teams are already registered to participate in the May 4 event.

Individuals interested in joining or creating Relay for Life teams are invited to attend the next Relay for Life Team Captain meeting which is scheduled for Monday, February 27 at the Lamar State College – Orange Wilson Building, Room 101.

Last year, 93 Orange County Relay for Life teams raised more than $232,539; while, 151 cancer survivors attended the event.

Collectively, Orange County Relay events, over the past 12 years, have raised more than $1 million to help Orange County cancer patients.

Funds raised through the Orange County Relay for Life benefit Orange County patients. Local patients are supported through “Road to Recovery” which provides rides to those who do not have transportation.

Relay for Life also supports “Look Good…Feel Better” which helps women cope with skin changes and hair loss. “Reach to Recovery” pairs breast cancer patients with volunteers who will discuss coping with diagnosis and treatment.

Relay also supports Hope Lodge and college scholarships.

Additional Orange County Relay for Life Team Captain meetings are scheduled for March 26, April 17, April 23, and April 30.

Robert Davidson is the 2012 Orange County Relay for Life Co- Chair.
