Wednesday, March 11, at approximately 11:00 pm, a detective with the Orange County Special Services Division was traveling on IH-10 near MLK Jr. Dr., when he observed an SUV traveling the same direction, swerve, causing the vehicle to cross into another lane of traffic.

Desmond Spears

The detective stopped the vehicle for the traffic violation, and made contact with the driver, Desmond Spears, 29, of Orange. During a search of the vehicle, two baby bottles were found hidden in the console of the vehicle, containing a liquid substance that was believed to be codeine. A 9mm semi-automatic firearm was also observed in plain view.

The passenger, Darrell Powell, 37, also of Orange, was a previously convicted felon, and was therefore charged with a felon in possession of a firearm, a third degree felony.

Both men were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a first degree felony. Desmond Spears was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Justice of the Peace, David Peck arraigned both men Thursday morning. Spears had bonds totaling $42,000, while Powell had bonds in the amount of $60,000. Both remain in custody at the Orange County Jail.
