Angelle leads LU past Privateers

With some of the best players in Lamar's extensive baseball history watching on, Chase Angelle was sublime on the mound on Saturday afternoon as he held visiting New Orleans to just two hits in a 6-1 victory for the Cardinals at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

LU, which is celebrating its annual alumni weekend, has now picked up five consecutive Southland wins and a second straight series victory to improve to 20-15 on the year with a 7-7 league mark.

"It was kind of cool to have all of those players looking on," Angelle said. "There were about 30 or so watching me warm up in the bullpen before the game, and it's nice to go out there after that and represent Lamar University well."

"Chase was fantastic, and today is just wonderful," head coach Jim Gilligan added. "We picked up a win in the afternoon, and I think the kids looked inspired after the introductions to some of the former players before the game. It's really great to have that win going into the banquet tonight."

Angelle, who became the first Card this season to toss a complete game, faced just three batters above the minimum in allowing one earned run and a pair of scores over the nine innings. The southpaw out of Orange was impressively efficient, throwing just 98 pitches and holding the Privateers (10-22, 2-12 Southland) hitless after the third inning.

"I was a little uncomfortable in the first inning, but I settled in right after that," Angelle said. "I had all my pitches working all day. I hit my locations, and my defense was great behind me. When I got to through sixth inning, I was determined to make it through the whole game."

After New Orleans pushed across the opening tally in the first, the LU offense wasted little time in responding. Jude Vidrine and Reed Seeley led off bottom half of the inning with walks, and Jacoby Middleton came through with a two-out double to right center to put the Red and White on top.

From there, the game would turn into a pitcher's duel as UNO's Nick Halliday held the Cards scoreless over the ensuing five frames before another Middleton two-out two-run double gave LU some breathing room.

Middleton finished the day 2-for-5 with four runs batted in, and the Cards as a team rolled up 11 hits. Sam Bumpers was chief among the rest of the line-up, going 3-for-5 with a triple and extending his consecutive games with a hit streak out to 19 games. The senior shortstop is now tied for the third-longest such streak in school history.

Seeley was also impressive, ending 1-for-2 with three walks, and Justin Eckols was 2-for-4 with a score.

The Cards will be hunting a second consecutive Southland sweep on Sunday, and first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
