Lady Cards climb to fourth in golf
Two Lamar Lady Cardinals carded under par rounds, and LU’s top three golfers combined to finish at even par in the final round of the FedEx/Memphis Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon on the par 71 Ridgeway Golf Course.
“We got some very strong performances from the top three players on our roster this week,” said head coach Brian White. “We need to get some more consistency from the bottom of our order, but I’m happy with our start. We played some very good teams in our first tournament, and we now have a benchmark of what we need to do to get better.”
Freshman Wenny Chang battled her way into the top 10 improving every round after opening Monday with a four-over par 75. Chang finished the tournament eighth overall with a 74-73-70 – 218. Junior Taylor Stockton was tied with Chang after the first round of action, but posted a consecutive 75 in the second round before rallying in the final 18 holes. Stockton carded the team’s lowest round of the young season when she fired a two-under 69 Tuesday. She finished the day 13th overall with a six-over par 219.
Senior Nghi Ngo struggled in the opening round of play but bounced back in the final two rounds. After shooting an eight over Monday morning, Ngo rebounded with a 70-74 to finish the tournament tied for 17th (223).
Sophomore Kelly Erasmus was unable to find her rhythm after a strong opening round that saw her post the team’s top score (73). After flirting with the top 10 on the opening day Erasmus fell to 24th overall with a nine over in the final round (73-75-80 – 228).
Classmate Bertille Dupont struggled out of the gate in the season opener, and was never able to recover. She finished the tournament 60th with a three-round 79-80-81 – 240. Redshirt freshman Olivia Le Roux competed on an individual basis carding a three-round 80-77-78 – 235 to finish tied for 38th.
The Lady Cardinals return to action Friday Sept. 19 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Mason Rudolph Championship. Three-day event will see teams play 18 holes each day through the conclusion of the tournament Sunday.
