Junior linebacker Ronnie Jones Jr. has been named College Sports Madness Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced CSM officials. Jones was recognized for his efforts in Lamar’s 31-20 victory over Incarnate Word Saturday.

"I just wanted to have a big game for the seniors," said Jones. "All I cared about was doing what I could to help send those guys out with a win. Our offense is so explosive so it's nice to know that we can be there to lift them up when things aren't going their way," added Jones.

Jones led a defensive effort that held an Incarnate Word team to 300 yards of total offense, 20 points and forced two turnovers. That effort proved to be the difference in a game that saw Lamar’s normally explosive offense not quite on its game Saturday.

Jones was all over the field making big hit, after big hit. He ended the game with 12 tackles, including nine solo stops. Among his 12 stops, three were for losses, including two sacks. Jones was also credited with a forced fumble against UIW as well.

The Cardinals will go in search of a school-record tying eighth win Saturday at McNeese State. Lamar has already assured itself of a winning season, and now is looking for the most wins since 1974. Saturday’s game at McNeese State is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. from Cowboy Stadium.
