A violent sex offender who escaped from electronic monitoring in Houston earlier this month is back in custody.

Bruce McCain, 51, turned himself in yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 26, and McAllen police transported him to the Hidalgo County jail. He will eventually be transported back to Harris County where he faces a felony violating civil commitment charge and parole violation.

McCain was last seen on Monday, Oct. 1 when he escaped from a northeast Houston halfway house in the Loop 610/Beaumont Highway area.

McCain was then added to the DPS Ten Most Wanted Sex Offender list and a reward was offered for his capture. DPS, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force, the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and local authorities had been searching for him since his escape.

McCain was originally sentenced for two sexual assaults in Nueces County in 1986. He was paroled in May and placed on electronic monitoring.

The 10 Most Wanted Sex Offenders list is available on the DPS website at http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/wanted/sexoffenders/topTenSexOffenders.htm# .
