Living Legacy

The W.H. Stark House Carriage House

Discover the many ways the W.H. Stark family was active and involved in the community by viewing the new exhibit display, Living Legacy, located on the second floor of the Carriage House.

Included are many touching stories of how the W.H. Starks helped families, individuals and organizations.

You will be introduced to never before exhibited objects from the Collection of The W.H. Stark House.

Living Legacy will provide ideas of how you may become involved in the community today! Included with general admission.

A Death in the Family: Mourning and Remembrance: 1880s - 1930s

Hours: 9am - 5pm; last tour begins at 4pm

The W.H. Stark House Entrance through the adjacent Carriage House

Explore mourning death as an intrinsic part of life with elaborate rituals and social customs.

For the first time, the Tower Room is used as an exhibition space, with special opportunities to learn and participate.

The exhibition is the last stop on the regular tour, giving visitors an extraordinary experience in the historic setting.

This thematic exhibition is organized chronologically and illuminates the changes in mourning practices from the 1880s to the 1930s, featuring objects from the Collection of The W.H. Stark House along with historic photographs, illustrations and documents.

Wicked Plants: The Exhibit

This new, loaned exhibition invites you to step into a macabre world where plants hold all the power.

Poisonous, carnivorous, or just plain nasty, the diabolical botanicals represented throughout this exhibit have left their mark on history and claimed many an unfortunate victim.

Poisonous Pages: Rare Botanical Books from the Stark Museum of Art

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm

This exhibition highlights historic images of plants that harm.

It features eleven rare botanical books form the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries.

Each book is open to a page with a handsome woodcut or engraving that portrays a dangerous plant.

Bright Beasts: Animals in Illuminated Manuscripts

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm

This exhibit explores the roles of beasts, both natural and imaginary, in illuminated manuscripts.

Four medieval Books of Hours from the Collection of Stark Museum of Art are open to images that portray animals as actors in the narrative, as symbols, or as a decoration.

Animals play an important role in the narrative of the Christmas story.

Scarecrow Festival

Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center

Celebrate the changing season by visiting the largest Scarecrow Festival in Texas, with dozens of hand-crafted scarecrows displayed throughout the Gardens.

Created by community organizations, businesses, schools, and families, scarecrow designs range from funny, to clever, to wacky and weird! For sure, no two scarecrows are ever the same! In this friendly competition, visitors are asked to vote for their favorite scarecrow, winners will be awarded a special prize on November 7, 2015, at Autumn Fair.

Gallery Scavenger Hunt: Native American Heritage

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm

Weave your way through our galleries to celebrate Native American Heritage.

Native American cultures have a rich history of creating tremendous textiles.

Examine these textiles in detail and in context through paintings! Discover unique materials like ermine tails, human hair, and handmade thread in these works of art. After you've completed the hunt, you can claim a prize.

On the first Tuesday each month, try out a new scavenger hunt.

Prizes change monthly too, so be sure to stop by and discover new connections with art! For all ages.

Vince Gill & The Time Jumpers

Suppose you've been granted just one night of your life in Nashville...Tap any member of The Time Jumpers on the shoulder and the face that turns to greet you will be that of one who's made major contributions to the richness and vigor of country music.

The current edition ofThe Time Jumpers includes 10 members, each a master of his instrument.

Lecture: Jennifer McWilliams, Plants as Reflections of Culture and Trends

Held at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in coordination with The W.H. Stark House

Throughout history, plant selections used in landscapes reflect the customs, traditions, fashionable trends of the time.

Cemeteries offer unique insights into traditional; and trend-based plant use.

As the Historic Cemetery Preservation Coordinator for the Texas Historical Commission, Jennifer McWilliams has traveled throughout Texas investigation and documenting plants that have been included in hundreds of cemetery landscapes.

She will share her discoveries and discuss how and why these plants were used.

The witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick - until a stormy wind blows away the witch's hat, bow and wand.

A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch's lost things, and they all hop on the broom for a ride.

But this broomstick's not meant for five and - CRACK - the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone?
