On Thursday, March 10, at 4:51 pm, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a shooting at a trailer park in the 12000 block of N. Hwy. 62 in Mauriceville. The caller stated a male subject had been shot and another male was still in the area with a shotgun.

As deputies and detectives arrived at the trailer park, they observed an injured man, identified as 33 year old Jason Bourgeois, lying near his residence. Another man, 55 year old Marc Benoit, was standing in the roadway of the trailer park and was identified by others living in the trailer park as the second man involved in the shooting. Officers quickly detained Benoit and secured a shotgun that was located near him.

After speaking with several witnesses it was found that a disturbance had occurred between Bourgeois and Benoit’s daughter. Both men were seen with shotguns. The disturbance escalated and Bourgeois was shot receiving wounds to the upper portion of his body.

Detectives transported Benoit to the Sheriff’s Office to obtain a statement. He was not arrested.

Bourgeois was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont and was reported to be in critical but stable condition as of noon today.

Sheriff Merritt stated a thorough investigation will continue and arrests may follow pending the outcome of the investigation.
