Can you believe it’s already 2023!? It seems like we just got started with 2022, and now it’s gone in the blink of an eye. Before we write it off altogether, maybe we ought to look back on it one last time and see what has transpired in the previous twelve months. There is not enough room to tell about everything that went on, but here are some of what I consider highlights for the City. This past year began with the retirement of two long-time employees. Jerry Jones, our Cit...

I don’t know about you, but this finally feels like fall is here. Temperatures are making their way into the 50’s in the mornings, not getting into the 90’s at midday, all of that spells autumn. The leaves are even beginning to act like it’s that time of year. Speaking of fall, that’s a good time for festivals in this part of the country because of the weather. I hope everyone was able to attend the National Night Out last evening. I would like to thank all the citizens...

Summer is starting to wind down, seems as if everyone is getting ready for school to start. A week from today it’s going to officially open up for the fall semester. This is always an exciting time for students, teachers, administrators, and parents. For everyone who drives our streets and highways, we need to be aware of school buses running their routes, of children waiting at bus stops, of the increase in traffic during the morning and afternoon “drive times”. And pleas...

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad to see our drought gone! It was becoming a drain on everyone’s patience and pocketbook. The ground around my slab was starting to shrink away from the concrete and needed watering. Plants and trees were becoming almost daily water consumers. That and the heat associated with the dry spell came earlier and seemed to stay longer than it had in previous years. The last high-pressure system that I can remember moving over us and staying like...

Here’s a few things happening around City Hall. As you well know, the Atlantic hurricane season is upon us. It’s time to start thinking about your preparations and plans for the upcoming summer and fall around this. From what I can gather so far, it’s supposed to be an “above average year for cyclone activity”, so a little diligence now may save some heartaches later. There are numerous sources out there to help with planning for emergencies, just do a quick internet...

This past week, some of our City Council members had the opportunity to meet with other Councilmembers from the 12-county area that makes up Region 16 of the Texas Municipal League (TML). In attendance at this forum were Council Members Mike Reed, Aaron Roccaforte, Terri Gauthier, and myself. This gathering was part of our ongoing collaboration with other cities to exchange ideas, learn new things, teach others some things we’ve learned, find out how and where to get help w...

  • Here's just a few of the happenings at City Hall.

Mayor David Rutledge, For the Record|Updated Feb 1, 2022

City Hall will be closed this month on Monday, February 21st in observance of Presidents' Day. When I was in school (way back in ancient times!) we observed February 12 as President Lincoln's Birthday and February 22 as President Washington's Birthday. I guess they consolidated them so we would only have one holiday in the month. Either way, it's probably good for us to remember these two and all the other chief executives for their contributions to our country and our...

  • Bridge City sets new pace with 2022 projects

Mayor David Rutledge, For the Record|Updated Jan 4, 2022

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for 2022 to get here and 2021 to finally leave. To paraphrase Yogi Berra, '21 was like déjà vu all over again from 2020. Covid-19 didn't seem to let go of us like we thought it would. However, it looks like we're starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel, if only these variants would just go away. With that in mind, I think I'd rather look at what's ahead of us this year rather than looking back at where we've been. In the C...

Come out this Friday evening, December 3rd beginning at 5:00 pm for our first annual "Christmas in the Park" and Christmas tree lighting. The fun will begin at 5:00 pm. We'll have school choir children singing Christmas carols at the pavilion. There will be vendor booths in the Community Center and Library parking lots with all kinds of arts and crafts, food and drinks, and other entertainment. Santa Claus will be there for pictures and visiting with the children. Santa would...
