As I sit here in front of this computer I can’t help but be excited about the prospects for another great year on Sabine and Calcasieu. In the years since the upper Texas coast and western half of Louisiana got absolutely hammered by hurricanes, the landscape has changed as far as the eye can see. Many traditional fall and winter “hotspots” have either been covered in mud or littered with debris making fishing that spot a much more difficult task. In years past, we have alway...

More motorists are sticking closer to home this month but that hasn't stopped pump prices from climbing. At the moment, there are a number of reasons for Americans to drive less. They could be huddling in front of fireplaces against icy winter blasts that have blanketed much of the country. They could be diverting money to pay off holiday bills. Or, they could be restricting non-essential driving and purchases because of rising pump prices. Analysts are closely watching...
This poem was featured in the Jan. 13, 1998 issue. It was written by Cindy Claybar and Josette Choate after Katie Schossow and Melissa Mesch passed away after an auto-pedestrian accident on Jan. 9, 1998. Reflections of Melissa and Katie If we could close our eyes and open our broken hearts, We could feel our sadness and worries depart. We must give ourselves to God above, and let Him hold us in His love. God gives us a vision as we weep and cry, a word from two young Angels as they pass by. We must leave you for a little...

In all honesty, had it not been for a great visit with some guides that I am lucky to see once or twice a year, the $10 parking fee would have been a waste of money at last week’s Houston Boat Show. Most of the boat manufacturers were represented, but there was little else to see in the way of new fishing tackle, lures, etc. The crowds may have been waiting on the final weekend, but attendance also appeared to be very poor up until that point. Capt. Charlie Paradoski and C...

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE Well, it’s come on a full moon this Jan. 19. If the clouds will stay away, we can get a few bright nights. Sometimes it just takes a full moon to make everything seem brighter. We could use any kind of brightness. Another week has rolled around since we last visited. I had the opportunity to watch two good attorneys work. I like to observe anyone who is good at their craft regardless of what it is, but I really like to see the checker games played between good attorneys. This past week, I witnessed John C...

It never ceases to amaze me how some political zealots will grab at any opportunity to demean and degrade their opponents. The latest example is a result of the horrific tragedy of the Arizona shooting. Everyone has heard about it by now. A crazed shooter went on a rampage leaving behind dead and wounded, and within minutes political left wingers were hurling accusations at Sarah Palin for her website. If you haven’t seen the website, too late. It’s down, but being the intense competitor she is, the site had pinpointed Dem...
