The Lamar State College-Port Arthur women’s softball team will be a player short when they take the field Friday for a home doubleheader against Coastal Bend College. Starting right-fielder Jenna Angelle from Bridge City will be on the bench for the rest of the season after having surgery Tuesday to repair a broken bone in her throwing hand. Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards said Angelle jammed her finger while sliding into second base in a Feb. 23 home game against L...
The Bassmaster Central Open held out of Cypress Bend on Toledo Bend last week proved to be a logistical nightmare for the pro anglers that produced a winner only after a half day tie-breaking shootout on Sunday. The first day of the event was cancelled due to a blistering south wind that threatened the safety of the anglers. That move changed the game plan for the entire field as the elimination format was reduced to a two-day slug fest. The conditions were not a much better the next two days, but the pros still fished from...
It didn’t take long for owner Jerry Jones to disinfect the Dallas Cowboys roster, purging the locker room of negative influences like always-unhappy wide receiver Terrell Owens and veteran safety Roy Williams and eliminating the criminal element by releasing Adam “Pacman” Jones and Tank Johnson. We’ll probably never know what made Jerry Jones do an about-face from his usual attitude of giving these law-breaking football players, second, third and even fourth chances to become crime-free, but we do have our theories. The mos...
Trout green water you can see your toes in, bait so thick you could walk across it to the other side, light winds barely ripple the surface and the major feed is just around the corner. These images conjure up a great picture for fishermen from Baffin to Calcasieu and all points in between, all the right factors are in place and it’s only a matter of time until the whole place goes nuts. Fast forward a couple of hours ahead only to find our angler who had everything going their way still has an empty stringer, what gives? W...
“Trust me. I’m here to help you,” says the government. If I had to choose the world’s most often used lie, it would be between the previous remark and the oft uttered, “The check’s in the mail.” Have you ever reached the point in a particular situation where you felt almost compelled to throw up your hands scream, “That’s it! I’ve had it! I’m washing my hands of it all”? That’s exactly the way I feel about Congress as a collective group. Now, I’m not ranting about the bailout any longer. It won’t do any good. I cringe...

IKE, SIX MONTHS LATER This week, March 13, will mark six months since Ike came calling. Heartbreak followed for many on the Gulf Coast. In Bridge City all but 14 homes were affected. Most people have been displaced or are living in FEMA trailers. Many residences have left, never to return, while others are working diligently to get back in their homes and resume a normal life. Many are in a desperate situation, others, with flood insurance, have faired fairly well. One thing that seems universal around the community is determ...
