  • NCAA’S ‘big dance’ about to begin

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

The waiting is over and the second season of college basketball is about to take place as the NCAA March Madness is ready to begin for both the men and women college players who were fortunate enough to be hooked up with a team that either earned a berth by winning their way into the “big dance” or were good enough to be selected to fill the limited spots remaining in the tournament bracket. At this time next week the men’s 64-team bracket will be trimmed down to the “Sweet Sixteen” which means that 75 per cent of those teams...

  • North of the Creaux's Nest

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

THE SIGHTS AND SMELLS OF EARLY SPRING I sit here this early morning, in my favorite secluded spot with just a pad and pen. Soon I will have to head to the dungeon for five or six hours of work on this column. That’s where my notes and records are. It’s a great spring-like morning with what seems like a touch of fall in the air. The trees are all budding leaves, all but the big pecan tree. Until it starts to bud winter isn’t over and a frost could still be on the way. The many shades of fresh green colors are only avail...

Smith pitched four of the five innings giving up three hits, one walk, striking out one and hitting two batters, while allowing only one run. Carpenter came in to close the game striking out two of the three batters he...

  • Warmer temps and longer days are a fisherman's friend

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

In all honesty this has to be one of my absolute most favorite times of the year, that transition from winter into spring when the weather starts to cooperate and the fishing goes nuts. April generally signifies the spring patterns are here or at least really close anyway and we have nothing to look forward to except some out of this world conditions in which to fish. For me personally, I will be thankful that those unbelievable winds of March will be behind us for the most...

  • Mushroom steak sauce

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

Now that we have moved up to “Spring Forward” it is time to dig out the grill and clean it up for some good cooking. Now Charlie would just as soon have homemade ice cream, however, I’d like to have a big juicy rib-eye, a baked potato and some green salad (then you can top it off with ice cream!). I used to make ice cream every week during the summer months. However, I guess that just got dropped for some reason or another. If you are going to grill you’ll need a good steak sauce. I found one that sounds like it would b...

  • The days of Lawrence and roses

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

There was a time many years ago when Milton Berle died. I talked to some of his fans, and they told me all about the Golden Age of Television. One woman said she and her husband frequently dressed up just to watch Lawrence Welk, martinis in hand. I wasn’t dressed up Saturday night when I saw Lawrence. I didn’t even have a drink. Well at that point anyway. What I did have was a sense of family shows that have gone by. These days, the Welk show is in the wasteland. It’s pretty much just not there, except on PBS or whate...

  • Three Letters or Four, You Choose

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

Today I want to examine two words. But first, let’s look at what what makes them different. In Dr. Seuss’ book “Red Fish, Blue Fish”, there is a character named “Ish.” Ish carries a dish and magically on the dish appear fish. So if you have an “Ish” it will bring you fish on the ish fish dish. Any Dr. Seuss fans? Well the word “ish” has numerous meanings. Dictionary.com says, “addicted to,” or “inclined or tending to.” It, is a word that is usually an add on to words like “freakish, Spanish, or babyish.”  The second wo...

  • Debated book set for BC signing

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

There are two sides to every story. Rebecca Stark Nugent has told hers in “If the Devil had a Wife,” a book about the Stark family, fortune and secrets. The most controversial book in Orange County has been flying out the door of the only store brave enough to carry it.  Bayou Trading Company in Bridge City, an antique shop, has sold more than 500 copies in just the last couple of weeks. They keep getting more thinking it will be enough to carry them through the boo...

  • BC sets deadlines, options

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

Bridge City council members, anxious to clear out the town's remaining temporary housing units, while not unsympathetic to special cases, decided in a Tuesday workshop to send out letters to some 200 residents. Residents will have up to Sept. 30 as the maximum allowable amount of time, said City Manager Jerry Jones. Cases will be reviewed each 30 days. If they aren't making progress their case will not be renewed, but as long it's clear work is being done they will be granted...

  • Port of Orange: Signal success called ‘unprecedented’

    Updated Mar 17, 2010

Signal success called ‘unprecedented’ In May of 2005, after the Naval Reserve Center in Orange was placed on a closures list, a meeting took place between area officials including U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, Orange Port Director Gene Bouillion and representatives of Orange County and the city of Orange. In the days that followed, it was decided to work to make the center and surrounding area Orange port property. “As a tribute to the camaraderie we have, everybody agreed that...
