The days are rare when I have more than enough good fishing news to report in this column. The unseasonable front that skipped through the area so quickly that you may have slept through it, apparently did very little to slow down the bite both on the lakes and right here on Sabine. I know we are in perhaps the toughest time of the year for Rayburn and Toledo Bend fishermen as the bass transition to deeper water following the spawn, but that is no reason to sell out on your dreams of catching a double-digit bass. If the massi...
The young pretty teacher is always a favorite among students. When Eunice Robinson (later Benckenstein) moved to Orange at the age of 21 to teach at the high school, her students never forgot her. She outlived most, if not all, of those early students. And though she taught only a few years, she became a staple of philanthropy and volunteerism in her adopted home. She died Sunday, at her home, at the age of 99 years and 11 months. Through the years she worked with a number of...

The legendary tale of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza came to life this week as the Orange Community Players presented “Man of La Mancha” in their newly renovated theater. Many notable musical numbers are performed in this play within a play, with the most famous being “The Impossible Dream.” The story is set in a Spanish prison vault at the end of the 16th Century. Cervantes, an actor and writer, is thrown in prison waiting to be questioned by the Spanish Inquisition. He is “put...

Before I give you this week’s recipe, I want to tell you about a small miracle (or is there such a thing as a small miracle?). Daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Bob Kuehn, came for an overnight visit on a Wednesday. Pat was able to go with us for the second part of Mac’s test that day and Bob stayed behind to fertilize our yard (God bless him for that). That evening, I put our trash out for the Thursday morning pickup. Thursday morning, when I awoke I noticed my gold chain necklace with the cross-sand dollar charm was mis...

The Cow Bayou Bridge has room to swing. A snug joint was widened to 3 1/4 inches resolving the problem. But it required historic ingenuity. A newly fabricated curved armor joint needed to be created that was exactly as the bridge’s original. It fit the historic bridge perfectly. The first phase in a three phase rehabilitation plan by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to restore the pre-WW II era swing bridge is being completed this week. The project has been u...

Occasionally when I ask someone to send me their favorite recipe they actually do. My fax number is the same as my phone number. When you send it you’ll get the answering machine, but pay it no mind the fax is going through. My only request is that you send a typed copy or print it. Even with my enlarger I can’t read handwriting well. The writing is OK, my eyes just don’t want to co-operated. Any way, when we were at Dr. Williams’ office last week, his nurse, Kay, said she had a delicious macaroni salad. I am sharing it with...
It was a great weekend for horse racing fans and for those baseball fans who have been hoping during the first month of the season that their Houston Astros would begin to play the type of ball they are more accustomed to watching. Saturday was Derby Day as the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby took place as usual on the first weekend in May at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville , KY. Big Brown, the early unbeaten favorite, lost some of his support when he drew the far outside post position in this huge 20 horse field....

The sun has just broken the horizon to illuminate a relatively smooth lake surface, the temperatures are mild and the forecast is in the anglers favor. A short boat ride into the wide open expanse of Sabine is stopped so one of the anglers in the boat can glass the area with a pair of binoculars in hopes of finding a set of working birds. The glassing pays off and the boat of hopeful anglers speed off in the direction of the birds with visions of speckled trout busting shrimp racing through their mind. The boat driver pulls...
WE COULD USE RAIN WITHOUT SUNSHINE Our weather is like corn flakes without milk. For the first time in many years, this spring is more like spring is suppose to be. Warm weather, cool weather, the exception being no April showers. In fact, here at the Creaux’s Nest we received only about a half-inch shower in seven weeks. We missed a good chance last Saturday but we also dodged the horrible killer tornado weather that roared north of us into Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and other states. *****By the way, we visited with Paul...

There was a party going on Friday night at Bridge City’s Larry Ward Stadium. Orange County’s Relay for Life expanded far beyond American Cancer Society’s expectations for this year. Last year, 42 teams participated. The goal for this year was set at 47 teams. To Jacki Burlson’s surprise, 79 teams signed up for the annual event, almost double the goal. More than 1,100 people participated. “I’ve never had that big of a relay,” said Burlson who is the Community Manager of In...

Bridge City High School senior Madison Davis won the third place position in editorial writing at the state UIL meet at the University of Texas at Austin this weekend. Editorial writing is a specific journalistic style of writing that requires the writer to take a stand on an issue and call the audience to take action. Placing at this level is very difficult due to the difficulty of the judging and the statewide competition. Madison has competed at the regional level in...
