  • May signals the start of something good for local fishermen

    Updated May 6, 2009

If you are like me, you have had enough of this wind. Goodness, it has blown like nobody’s business and just keeps right on ripping. In normal years we would have just chalked this up to a normal spring, this year was a little bit different. The absolutely amazing fishing that we have enjoyed on Sabine and Calcasieu for the first several months of the year were almost unprecedented. It was down right incredible at times. The combination of willing fish and cool spring temperat...

  • Jaques moving up to ‘next level’ in two sports

    Updated May 6, 2009

She is one of the best all-around high school girl athletes on record in Orange County. Now, Christina Jaques, a former star athlete and record breaker from Bridge City, is “moving up to the next level” not just in one sport but two. The All-American short stop for the LSC-PA Seahawks grabbed the opportunity to try-out for both volleyball and softball scholarships at Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss. last week. She hadn’t played volleyball since graduating Bridge City High...

  • North of the Creaux's nest

    Updated May 6, 2009

WHY ARE WE SUCKERS FOR HYPE The first report I heard on that so called Swine Flu was a report on CNN. The announcer said the flu in Mexico has some officials speculating it might have terrorist’s involvement. I said, “Oh, s---, here we go again.” Before long, all the news channels were carrying news of the deadly Swine virus. The next morning newspaper headlines carried the news throughout the country. Soon there was speculation that this could be the big one, like the flu of 1918 that killed five million around the world...

Community group considers new school  Another series of proposals – including interior and exterior design – were debated Tuesday in a Bridge City community meeting concerning a proposed new elementary school for grades Pre-K through 2. The Hatton and Sims elementary campuses suffered the most damage among BCISD schools in Hurricane Ike. On-hand, among others, were district Superintendent Jamey Harrison, school board member Jerry McInnis, educators Lara Richard and Ken...

  • Questions About Our New President

    Updated May 6, 2009

Like every thinking American with an open and fair mind (I suppose you’d have to have an open and fair mind if you thought for yourself, huh?), I question many of our president’s decisions. With some I agree; others, disagree. While I sometimes listen to right wing radio, I have often switched to a music station when the guys get too extreme. I’ll be one of the first to admit that some of the extremely conservative views are Orwellian in nature. For example, to listen to the radio guys, you’d think that Obama bowing to...

  • No one slept through the “Drowsy Chaperone”

    Updated May 6, 2009

The easiest way to describe “The Drowsy Chaperone,” is “loads of fun.” A more accurate description would be Gershwin meets vaudeville meets “Mannequin.”  When Chaperone took to the stage Friday at the Lutcher Theater it was a unique experience. Starting in the dark, the man in the chair, played by John West, reminisced about Broadway musicals and offered to share “The Drowsy Chaperone,” from the ‘20s with the audience. As the music plays, the characters come forth, mater...

  • 30 minutes before press

    Updated May 6, 2009

Our dryer conked out Tuesday, so the next day I washed a bunch of clothes and trudged down to Laundry World. The last time I was there in the early ‘80s, it was called Duds ‘n Suds.  They had the kind of dryers back then you would expect to find in your house, with timers that required you to actually read instructions. The new ones Wednesday were computerized. You put in your clothes and a quarter and the machine did all the rest. Even told how much time I had left. Ellen was on the television with Michael Douglas, who...

  • Catfish and flounder taking up the slack

    Updated May 6, 2009

It was not unlike the same feeling I would get as a youngster opening presents on Christmas morning. Even as I unwrapped them I was already thinking, “Man, this is fun, but now I’ve got 365 days before it happens again!” Such was the case Sunday afternoon. Prior to this past weekend we had been struggling to even get on the water and there we were not only fishing, but “catching” for the second day in a row. In spite of the never ending winds, we got on a solid flounder bite that included several nice slot reds and even a sp...

  • Firestone CU, a participating member of the community

    Updated May 6, 2009

Like any other member of the Orange County community, Firestone Credit Union did not escape the wrath of Ike. There was so much damage at the Bridge City location, there was a possibility it would not reopen. Money had to be hand “laundered” and safety deposit boxes required drilling to open, spilling forth water along with its valuable and sometimes ruined contents. It was months before the Orange and BC branches reopened, but both recently held grand re-opening ribbon cut...
