  • Dog days of summer mean more options on the water

    Updated May 12, 2009

After weeks of constantly changing winds that have driven anglers crazy it seems that better days are officially here. The traditional summer programs are now actually fishable and anglers have more options than just hiding from the howling winds.  Sabine and Calcasieu have now become much more fisherman-friendly and it seems that not only has the weather begun to cooperate but the fish have also decided to join the party as well. The best thing about this time of the year is the endless possibility of patterns of which...

  • The best Mother’s Day gift

    Updated May 12, 2009

“Mama I’m Coming Home.” The Ozzie Osborne classic was blaring the airwaves Sunday as mothers, daughters, wives and sweethearts waited in the heat, impatiently patient, excited, knowing the time was almost here. Their sons and daughters were coming home from the war in Iraq.  The word was, they were already on the ground, loaded on buses, waiting for the appointed time. Cell phones were seen in use everywhere, keeping the crowd updated. The DJ kept the music pumping, getti...

    Updated May 12, 2009

“What do you think those guys are fishing for out there in all those waves?” asked one of my clients as we started across Coffee Ground Cove. It may only be about nine weeks before Orange County Mosquito Control receives final certification from the Federal Aviation Administration to get its plane flying. Mosquito Control Director Patrick Beebe told commissioners Monday his office was waiting on the FAA to send word on plans for final inspection of the county’s aerial spraying program.  It will be the county’s final administration certification for the spraying program. Commissioners, however – their offic...

  • Symptoms send Total workers to hospital, plant investigates

    Updated May 12, 2009

An investigation is underway at Total Refinery in Port Arthur to determine if there is a leak at the plant, after several workers complained about shortness of breath around 8:15 this morning. Three refinery workers were taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.  “We haven’t isolated it yet to see if it’s a particular area of the plant or if there has been a leak,” responded Pat Avery, Total spokeswoman. The Port Arthur Police nor Fire Department have been called to the scene....
