  • BCHS Class of 1968 Reunion

    Updated May 20, 2008

It had been 40 years since they had walked the aisle in a red cap and gown, but none of them acted like it. An energetic crowd of Cardinals from the Class of 1968 gathered for their reunion. The day started with a picnic held at Johnny Montagne’s home on the bayou. “I got volunteered for this by Moe Litton,” said Montagne. Litton had been coach, trainer and biology teacher for the class. The respect for teacher and student was mutual. Litton still cared enough for this class...

  • Cajun music draws crowd, dancing

    Updated May 20, 2008

Cajuns have an adage about their music. If you hear a tune, you dance. And the Third Annual Texas Cajun Heritage Festival had a lot of dancing to go with 10 hours of Cajun music. The Texas Cajun Heritage Festival, sponsored by the City of Orange Convention and Visitors Bureau, was held in Orange Saturday off Simmons Drive at the boat ramp area. With five bands scheduled, there was a new band every two hours. Louisiana Scramble kicked off the day of music, feasting and fun at...

  • From the Creaux's Nest

    Updated May 20, 2008

THE CAT AND THE MOCKINGBIRD You can’t kill a Mockingbird, it’s against the law, it’s protected, and it’s the Texas state bird. However, I know a mama cat that would eat that sucker if she could ever get her paws on it. For a week, I’ve watched that bird torment the cat. The bird hides out in the Hackberry or up on the high wire and when the cat crosses the yard, here it comes, skydiving onto her head or her back. The only way to get away is the bushes. The bird has lots of patience, it will waste and entire day waiting for th...

  • Thibodeaux: County must cut costs, or services, because of fuel costs

    Updated May 20, 2008

County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said Monday Orange County may have to reduce services if departments can’t find ways to cut fuel expenses. The county has some “found” money to pay for the increased costs of gasoline and diesel through the end of September. But the county will have to figure out how to cut fuel expenses for the 2008-09 fiscal year. The county transportation department, which operates small buses for senior citizens and the handicapped, needs another $50,000 through the end of September for fuel. The road and b...

  • Tournaments Galore in May

    Updated May 20, 2008

I know that gas for the fishing boat is a tough sale in the average household right now, but I would still encourage local saltwater fishermen to compete in one or two of the tournaments set for the end of May. Within the span of one week, the annual S.T.A.R. tournament will kick off, Texas Marine will host the second event of their big trout series, and the Saltwater Anglers League of Texas will host their 34th Annual Memorial Day Classic. If you prefer taking the spectator...

  • Big Puma, Big Brown seeking respective Triple Crowns

    Updated May 20, 2008

Baseball and horse racing don’t have anything in common except that both sports offer as its ultimate award a Triple Crown. For racing it is presented to a three-year –old horse that wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes over a period of five weeks. The Triple Crown in baseball takes 162 baseball games and goes to the individual player who leads his league in batting average, home runs and runs batted in. And it has been quite a while since either Triple Crown award has been handed out—Boston Red Sox slugg...

    Updated May 20, 2008

A faithful group of women are active in the Altar Society of St. Henry’s Catholic Church. The group provides many services to the church and community. Possibly the most visible of their projects is the care and supply of the supplies for the Altar. The group pays for the cloth, candles, bread and wine that are used at each service. A committee of the society is responsible for cleaning and washing the “purificators,” the cloths that are used in the service. The cloths are was...

  • Pina Colada Upside-Down Cake

    Updated May 20, 2008

Some would think I am a strange woman. I love kitchen gadgets. Anytime I am in a department store, such as Bed or Bath & Beyond or Wal-Mart, I find myself drawn to the kitchen section. However, the best and my favorite kitchen accessories are sold at Pampered Chef Parties. They’re a bit more expensive but worth the extra cost. I recently attended a Pampered Chef Party in the home of Lois Ann Sheppard....and yes I did purchase a few “thingamajigs.” One of the best parts of being at one of these parties, a meal is prepared by t...

  • Trading places and techniques

    Updated May 20, 2008

Like a scene from a bad surf movie the whole “locals only” mystique plays out at the boat ramp every time a new angler from another bay system shows up to sample some new water. “What’s he going to do with that little bitty boat” or “what’s that diving board doing over the motor” are all questions and smart aleck remarks that come from the close minded. Some of the coolest innovations in techniques and approaches often come from folks who are not “locals”, these anglers bring new ideas and methods with them from their own...

  • Apricot Jell-O Salad

    Updated May 20, 2008

I had an apricot Jello-O left from making apricot jelly from jigs last year so I set out looking for a simple recipe for apricot Jell-O. I found I had Margie Calloway’s Jell-O salad. I didn’t have any marshmallows, but made it anyway and it is Gooder’n Syrup, even without marshmallows. • 2 packages Apricot Jell-O • 2 cups boiling water • 1 1/2 cups cool water • 1 #2 can crushed pineapple • 2 sliced bananas • 1 cup miniature marshmallows Dissolve Jell-O in boiling water, add cool water and set a...
