Before I give you the cake recipe, I have a hint should you ever misplace one sock. I was having a hard time matching socks. Charles came up with the idea we could buy all the same color, same design and my problems would be solved. He bought six pair of blue and six pair of brown socks, all the same design. The only problem now is I can’t tell blue from brown. So, Charles has to match the socks. Two weeks ago he lost one blue sock. I told him that it would show up one day in the leg of his pants, but hopefully not while h...
(From the Kitchen of Julia Morris) Each Wednesday evening at 5 p.m., our Church, Bridge City First Baptist, provides a meal for those wanting to attend the evening service. Cost is $3.00 a person but a minimum cost of $10.00 for a family of four or more. Different cook teams take turns cooking and so we have dedicated church members offering hearty meals. Last Wednesday, the cooks served lasagna, green beans, this coleslaw, garlic bread, and a variety of desserts. Everyone was raving about the coleslaw and some (including...

June 6, 1944 was the first Tuesday after school was turned out for the summer in Wheeler, Texas. It meant nothing to any of us. We had never heard the term ‘D-Day.’ D-Day was just a common name routinely given to the date of every planned offensive during World War II. It was coined in World War I before the massive U.S. attack at the Battle of Saint-Mihiel in France. And so naturally, it was applied to the Invasion of Normandy. As I mentioned, we kids in that little Texas town far up in the Panhandle knew nothing of D-D...
We were already catching trout both Friday and Saturday morning by the time Bob Sealy systematically dispatched the forty-nine teams fishing the Oberto’s Redfish Cup. In single file, they idled through the opening in the marina bulkhead on Pleasure Island before blasting off to parts unknown. Many years ago, when my wife and I were in the fishing tackle business, she would often flash a knowing smile after customers left with their purchase. “You hear all kind of stories all week long,” she would remind me, “but the truth com...
Texas anglers are encouraged to “think outside the baitcaster.” “Howdy Tex” was a common greeting from other anglers as Bink Grimes and I strode down the sidewalk towards our waiting boat. “I wonder how they know we’re from Texas,” I thought to myself, then I looked down at my rods and it hit me as I gazed at the fist full of baitcasters. We were in Florida and baitcasters are a dead giveaway that you are from the Lone Star State, down in the Sunshine State spinning tack...
