Robert Reid, Oates Elementary Principal, will be assigned to WO-S High School as Assistant Principal. “I appreciate Dr. Collins granting my request to return to the high school to assist Mr. Mike Mason and his fine staff. I return knowing that this move benefits the District and all...
July is a good time to make ice cream, however I’m not so sure that it will be any better time than right now according to the weather right now. You’ll need a gallon freezer. I make mine about half diet and half regular as you will see. First lets make some Orange Sherbet. This is not Charlie’s favorite, however the kids like it. 1 box of ice cream salt 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk 6 cans of orange drink 2 bags of crushed ice. Mix the condensed milk with 2 cans of drink. Put it into freezer and then add the rest of the...
Auditions and the annual Young People’s Theater Workshop will keep the Orange Community Players busy this summer. “Once Upon A Mattress,” set for August performances, will bring some newcomers to the OCP stage. Emily Wade of Orange has attended the Young People’s Workshop before, but this will be her first time with the adult theater. She cannot take part in the workshop this year because of her interests in a medical career that is filling her summer during that time. S...

If you are like most people and me, you like quick and easy one dish meals. During these hot days of summer, I want to escape from the kitchen as quick as possible. This kind of meal helps makes that possible. My friend Pat and her husband, Rodney, live a health conscious life style. She and Rodney walk daily plus spend a lot of time outside, maintaining their yard and vegetable garden. Pat also tries to provide a nourishing diet for their meals. She brought this healthy casserole to this month’s Adult Golden Harvest C...

“Being ordained means that I am called to be a disciple and follow wherever I believe that God is leading me.” Those are some of the words that Father Jim McClintock wrote to the members of his parish, because after more than 13 years at St. Henry he has been reassigned by the diocese. He will first go to Beaumont to serve where he may be needed within the diocese, then he will go to Rome in an extremely rare opportunity. “I will have the chance for refreshment and renewal thr...
ROLLING OUT ANOTHER WEEK Here at the Creaux’s Nest and Mr. Cox’s Neighborhood in the past 11 weeks, it has only rained 1.5 inches and that was five weeks ago. We have seen several showers come down in the area, but none on the Bridge City side of Cow Bayou. There is a 20 to 30 percent chance of a shower every day this week. We need a real rain but anything will help. Everything is burning up. People watering their gardens are reporting problems with armadillos digging everything up. A good rain would solve that. They wou...
In today’s highly specialized world of tackle and gear it seems like there is a bait for every individual situation. Lures have become so refined that the consumer cannot possibly ever catch unless they have a pocket full of cash and camp out at the local tackle shop. Now it’s one thing to have to worry about saltwater tackle and it’s quite another thing to worry about freshwater tackle, try worrying about both of them at the same time. Anglers on the upper coast of Texas are...
Last weekend found a couple of strange scenarios at the Belmont Race Track in New York and at Minute Maid Park in Houston as far as strange endings of sporting events are concerned. At the Belmont Stakes, which is the third and final leg of horse racing’s elusive Triple Crown, the trainer of heavy favored Big Brown guaranteed his horse would handily win that 1 1/2-mile race and become the first horse in 30 years to accomplish that sports most cherished award. And in Houston , our struggling Astros played well enough to sweep...
The daily weather forecast for Sabine Lake and surrounding waters is getting to be a tad redundant. “Southeast winds 15 to 20 knots. Seas 3 to 5 feet. Coastal lakes and bays light chop. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.” Three to five foot waves and a light chop do not belong in the same sentence! I am finally convinced that there is no longer any need to check the weather forecasts for the next month or two, nor has there been for the past four months, but I have tried to remain optimistic since mid-January. The...
The Texas Longhorn’s summer bull-riding series “Aces High” recently opened and runs through Aug. 29 at the club in Vinton . June 6, the night felt as if there was a party going on rather than just riding. Amiee Breaux and Southwind opened the night with great vocals, music and a mix of songs from slow dancing to southern rock. One of the best bands on the scene in several years, the group’s concerts range from an upcoming date in Las Vegas, to Polo’s Lounge in Orange an...
It started off like any normal week. Still hot and dry and no rain in sight. Word reached me that my last surviving elder relative, Aunt Eve Duplantis Lemaire, had died at age 105. I had spent time with her on her birthday April 4. She ate like a longshoreman and appeared to be poised to move on to 106. Like her mom, Grandma Availa, and her siblings, she didn’t have any of the common illnesses like heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. They were all a...
Contrary to what a local news broadcast implied in a recent report, Claiborne West Park is open and ready to be enjoyed. On June 2, Parks and Recreation’s Donna Scales told county commissioners that a bridge near the front of the park is repaired. The bridge, damaged by Hurricane Rita took so long to repair, not because of money but because contractors were hard to find for small jobs after the storm. A recent news story on KFDM-TV said the 30-year-old park would be closed ...
The Waterwood Estates Subdivision in Bridge City will get some quiet time thanks to a firearm restriction passed Monday by county commissioners. The Waterwood homeowner’s association requested the prohibition, commissioners’ attorney Doug Manning said. Waterwood is near the corner of Texas 62 and Texas 87. Apparently some are getting target practice shooting tin cans and other items in a wooded area there, Manning said. “The homeowners are not able to prohibit [the actions] themselves through a Class C misdemeanor,” he said...
A barrage of fraudulent e-mails and phone calls claiming to be from Orange Savings Bank began over the weekend. So called “phishing” scams have been around for years, but normally portray national companies. According to Nancy Vincent from Orange Savings Bank on 16th street in Orange, the bank has received calls from as far away as Colorado on the matter. “It’s amazing how many calls we’ve had,” she said. “We’ve got our fraud department working on it.” A typical e-mail st...
The Walgreen’s drugstore chain will bring about 20 jobs to Bridge City when it opens a location on the corner of Texas 87 and Roundbunch Road in the fall. The building will be about 14,800 square feet and offer a drive-through pharmacy service. Other services include touch-tone options for patients to enter their prescription number and request a time for a refill. Customers may arrange for automated refills and receive e-mail reminders regarding refills. The photo d...
Port Neches author and Record Newspapers columnist Kent Conwell’s tenth mystery, ‘ the Crystal Skull Murders from Avalon Books is being released this month, June 2008. ‘Crystal Skull Murders’ is based upon the legendary crystal skull allegedly worshiped by the ancients as a source of mythical powers. Coincidentally, the novel’s subject deals with the identical skull on which the latest Indiana Jones movie, ‘The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ focuses. According to the Lib...
When Green Avenue in Orange was lined with mansions 100 years ago, one stood out among the others, and it wasn’t the Stark House. The John Wiley Link home was considered larger and more elegant than even the Stark House, which is now a preserved home on the National Register of Historic Places. But time didn’t save that three-story mansion and fifty years ago this month, it was demolished. People in Orange today still talk about the house and how they wish it could have been p...
This year the Orange Public Library’s summer reading club program has a drawing of an armadillo wearing a skirt and dancing with a book wearing cowboy boots. It’s an illustration of the Texas Reading Club Jubilee, marking 50 years of reading for children. The 50th anniversary of the statewide reading program coincides with the 50th anniversary of the city-operated library. The summer reading club has now reached three generations of young book lovers. Besides reading books during the summer, children who par...

Bridge City council members recently approved to rezone a portion of their property at 2115 W. Roundbunch Road. Treasure Hunt will be the name of the business. “Our concept is simple, what we want to do is to form a people helping people organization,” says Chris Durso. “We are looking for good people from our community to help those that are less fortu...
