June 22-28 is Lightning Awareness Week, and Entergy Texas provides advice to help reduce being struck by lightning during the summer months, when the largest number of lightning deaths happen. Southeast Texas is already beginning to experience afternoon thunderstorms caused by daytime heating, meaning lightning strikes are a very real danger, said Entergy’s Debi Derrick. According to the National Weather Service, 62 people are killed each year by lightning in the United S...
I had to buy a new TV. Now, for those of you electronically challenged like me who have trouble finding the right end of an extension cord to plug into the wall, buying a new TV ranks right up there with a visit to the dentist’s office, even if he’s a great guy who always hides the fourteen-inch needle behind his back until you close your eyes. Our old TV upstairs went out sometime back. I replaced it with a small thirteen-inch we had in the closet. Young eyes could have handled the small TV, but a pair of eyes over seventy y...

Gerald LeLeux of Orangefield was honored with a retirement party at Tequila’s, Friday Night, June 20 given by co-workers. Almost 40 friends, family and co-workers were in attendance. The celebration came after a year of waiting for approval. LeLeux has been spending his extra time learning to play the guitar and being the “official” lap for JoeD, their Chauweeny dog. He joked that he reads the paper, his brother makes the coffee and his wife goes to work. His brother, Billy...

I admit it, I’m a reality TV junkie. Apparently I am not the only one, with the number of new reality shows hitting the air. My guess is they not only get good ratings but are cheap to produce, even with $100,000 and $1 million prizes. If the first episode of this season’s “America’s Got Talent” is any indication of what is to come, then I would highly recommend it to non-reality show junkies. I looks to be a very entertaining season. Choices will be hard to make because there are several outstanding acts that have already g...
JUST MOVING ON I’m just here trying to make a small living for a large family and things are getting tighter. At least the week is starting off good. We got rain last week, not as much as other folks but it really helped.*****The baseball head coach situation at Bridge City has been resolved. Considering all the applicants, I believe the best choice was made. Chad Landry, head coach at Hamshire-Fannett, is a young man with a lot of baseball knowledge who works well with young athletes. The hiring will not be official until n...
Despite some terrible early season weather, constantly changing winds and some relatively hard run off from heavy rains the conditions on both our local lakes, are ahead of schedule. On several trips in the last weeks I could not believe the amount of bait in our estuaries or the clarity of the water; both were impressive to say the least. The main bodies of the lakes as well as the surrounding marshes are full of life. The early season shad populations and shrimp numbers are enough to give even the most skeptical angler...
I don’t think I have ever received a phone call from Peggy Albair at Bridge City Seafood when she was not excited, and the most recent was no exception. In between selling seafood and cooking everything from shrimp PoPoys to fried catfish, she has weighed-in some potentially valuable fish this summer. Several years back, she and husband Richard decided to take on the duties of an official weigh station for the annual CCA S.T.A.R. tournament. “Aside from the fact that Ric...
On the week of March 5th of this year, you may recall the recipe for Coca-Cola Pork Chops that I featured in my recipe column. That recipe came from Sharon and Gene McFall’s recipe book titled “Busy Woman’s Cookbook”. In appreciation for his permission to use the recipe from their cookbook, I sent him the clipping from the paper. He kindly responded by writing me a nice letter and sent me his and his wife’s (Sharon) their newest cookbook titled “Busy Woman’s Slow Cooker Cookbook...Meals Ready and Waiting.” Lik...
As the second round of the Aces High Buckle Series at the Texas Longhorn got underway Friday, 10 bull-riders showed up ready to rope up and ride. However, Shane Young’s bulls had other ideas. The first nine riders went to the dirt. There is no other way to say it. They went down fast and hard. Dustin Grabb got hung up when he went off into the “well,” the inside of the spin, and spun so hard and fast he looked like a wing on the bull’s left side. For two spins he was...

Texas Unemployment Rate Rises to 4.5 Percent With an unemployment rate that has stayed below 5.0 percent for nearly two years and 238,700 jobs added in the last 12 months, Texas annual job growth rate is 2.3 percent. The national growth rate is 0.2 percent. “Job growth in Texas remained strong, outpacing the national trend,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Tom Pauken. “Despite the fact that the number of those seeking work went up this month, the Texas unemployment rate remained at historically low level...
The Better Business Bureau wants consumers to beware of a misleading advertising campaign by an Ohio-based company called Universal TechTronics. Ads are running across the U.S. promising free television channels, services and digital TV converter boxes, but are really a bait-and-switch tactic that prey on consumers’ lack of knowledge about digital TV conversion requirements. In 2009, television stations will stop analog broadcasts, and exclusively broadcast in digital. V...
